Goodreads Description: Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six: The band’s album Aurora came to define the rock ‘n’ roll era of the late seventies, and an entire generation of girls wanted to grow up to be Daisy. But no one knows the reason behind the group’s split on the night of their final concert at Chicago Stadium on July 12, 1979 . . . until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ‘n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

Story

A good book for me has always been something that everyone can enjoy, regardless of age or preference. I often yeet myself out of my comfort zone (fantasy) by reading something of a different genre and I have been putting off Daisy Jones and The Six for a year. I requested it because of the hype and kept putting it off because it was out of my reading comfort zone.

Boy am I glad I finally forced myself to pick it up. It was totally WORTH IT. The story followed the story of fictional rock band The Six, and how Daisy Jones ends up joining them. I’ve always loved rock, and reading about Daisy Jones and The Six made me nostalgic for a time before I was born.

I loved everything about this book, and I’m seriously hungover from reading it.

Writing

The format of the book was intriguing. It tells an oral history of the band and follows multiple characters and perspectives as they each tell their story. It’s beautifully written and every part of it punches you in the gut with emotion.

I could not put this book down. I had to know what happened to Daisy Jones and The Six, I had to know why they broke up. And now I’ll forever be sad about a fictional band breaking up.

Characters

Billy and Daisy had me feeling all kinds of FEELINGS. I rooted for them, yet I also rooted for Billy and Camilla. I was so conflicted. Karen was the real stand out in this book, and the person who I could identify the most with. I loved every part of her story and felt every emotion she did, even though she was just a supporting character.

The chemistry between Billy and Daisy was just off the charts. Their story is heartbreaking but ultimately I think Billy made the right choice. I loved the message of “love isn’t just chemistry, it’s a choice too” that Billy gives through, and I enjoyed Daisy’s arc as well.

I’m going to be sad about these characters for a long time, but in the best way possible. Seriously, read this book.

  1. I adored the fact that Daisy Jones and the Six was told in an oral way as well. I think Taylor Jenkins Reid has such an interesting way to tell stories, like in Evelyn Hugo it being a conversation with newspaper clippings and the split narratives in her other novels. She’s such a brilliant writer.

  4. Amazing review I heard fantastic raving review about this book and author and I am really glad you fully enjoyed reading this book. Thank you so much for sharing your awesome post.

  5. This is a great review! I read this last september and absolutely adored it. It was such a realistic story and the chemistry between Daisy and Billy was something out of this world, unlike anything I’ve seen and they didn’t even had a proper relationship. I’d say this was the best book I read in 2019.
