The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

10 Reasons to Read The Inheritance GamesAvery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why–or even who Tobias Hawthorne is. To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into the sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man’s touch–and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes.

Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he’s determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather’s last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

10. It’s basically Knives Out

If you’ve seen Knives Out, then you’ll LOVE this book. It has the same atmosphere and compelling twists. We all love a good mystery that turns the genre on its head, and The Inheritance Games is the perfect read for this.

9. The protagonist is actually smart

And by smart, I don’t mean she’s just a wise-ass stumbling through the plot. She actively takes part and figures out some of the major clues. Avery is a very likeable character and you really start to root for her. Although some of the plot happens to her, it’s very intentional. She’s supposed to be a pawn in this book, and I hope the sequel gives us more of her smarts.

8. The family dynamics are CRAZY

Four super-rich, super twisted brothers, suspicious aunts and mothers and long lost sons. The Hawthorne family dynamics are crazy and I am living for them. It complicates the story and makes for such an interesting read. I cannot wait for more.

7. It’s a bit National Treasure

Admit it, we all love watching Nicolas Cage solving clues and hunting treasure. The Inheritance Games is like this. It’s one big puzzle that needs to be solved. There’s secret passages, underground rooms, and messages hidden on paper. I love it.

6. It’s the perfect Fall book

This one is for those of you in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s officially Fall here and that makes me want to cosy up with a mystery book. The Inheritance Games is the perfect book to read on a rainy day in bed.

5. It’s a duology

I don’t know about you, but sometimes trilogies or series can be a bit daunting. I find myself gravitating more towards standalone and duologies. Luckily, this is a duology. Meaning there are only two books in this series. That’s a win in my book.

4. It’s easy to read and the writing is excellent

As a pointed out in my review, I love it when writing is eloquent and to the point. This book has short chapters and it does not beat you over the head with flowery writing.

3. The mystery isn’t convoluted

Sometimes with mystery books, I find the mystery to be a bit convoluted. It seems like the author needs to jump through so many hoops and do mental gymnastics to make the plot work. The Inheritance Games has none of that. It’s straightforward and rewards you for paying attention, but doesn’t confuse the hell out of you.

2. It’s also a Cinderella story

I love Cinderella retellings. Especially ones that involve murder, mysteries and mansions.

1. The side characters are amazing

Sometimes a book lacks well-rounded side characters. Not this one. The side characters are just as important as the main ones and they all feel really fleshed out. It just makes the story so much better, as all of the moving parts can make it go in any direction. That’s what makes this book so enjoyable.

There you have it! 10 Reasons to Read The Inheritance Games. I hope I’ve managed to convince you to pick up this book!
