2022 5 Star Predictions

Hi readers! Today I’m bringing you my 2022 5-star predictions. I’m listing 5 books (some new and some backlist) that I think I’ll be giving 5-stars to this year. I might be wrong, I might be right, or I just might not read them. Who knows? Let’s get into it!

How I did in 2021

I made this same post in 2021, and I did not read one single book on that list. I’m not proud of myself. This is why in 2022, I’ve decided to actively blog about my 5-star predictions. For each book on the 2022 list, I will make a reading blog and let you know how it went. Hopefully, this will help me actually read these books.

Mr Wrong Number by Lynn Painter

2022 5 Star PredictionsSynopsis: Bad luck has always followed Olivia Marshall…or maybe she’s just the screw-up her family thinks she is. But when a “What are you wearing?” text from a random wrong number turns into the hottest, most entertaining—albeit anonymous—relationship of her life, she thinks things might be on the upswing….

Colin Beck has always considered Olivia his best friend’s annoying little sister, but when she moves in with them after one of her worst runs of luck, he realizes she’s turned into an altogether different and sexier distraction. He’s sure he can keep his distance, until the moment he discovers she’s the irresistible Miss Misdial he’s been sort of sexting for weeks—and now he has to decide whether to turn the heat up or ghost her before things get messy.

I love romance books, so it’s no surprise I have one on this list. The description just sounds amazing, I love the premise and the characters sound amazing. It does seem to contain a few romance trope staples, but I’m not mad about it. I hope this book is super steamy and that I just become fully immersed in this world.

Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li

2022 5 Star PredictionsSynopsis: History is told by the conquerors. Across the Western world, museums display the spoils of war, of conquest, of colonialism: priceless pieces of art looted from other countries, kept even now.

Will Chen plans to steal them back.

A senior at Harvard, Will fits comfortably in his carefully curated roles: a perfect student, an art history major and sometimes artist, the eldest son that has always been his parents’ American Dream. But when a shadowy Chinese corporation reaches out with an impossible—and illegal—job offer, Will finds himself something else as well: the leader of a heist to steal back five priceless Chinese sculptures, looted from Beijing centuries ago.

His crew is every heist archetype one can imagine—or at least, the closest he can get. A conman: Irene Chen, Will’s sister and a public policy major at Duke, who can talk her way out of anything. A thief: Daniel Liang, a premed student with steady hands just as capable of lockpicking as suturing. A getaway driver: Lily Wu, an engineering student who races cars in her free time. A hacker: Alex Huang, an MIT dropout turned Silicon Valley software engineer. Each member of his crew has their own complicated relationship with China and the identity they’ve cultivated as Chinese Americans, but when Will asks, none of them can turn him down.

Because if they succeed? They earn fifty million dollars—and a chance to make history. But if they fail, it will mean not just the loss of everything they’ve dreamed for themselves but yet another thwarted attempt to take back what colonialism has stolen.

As soon as this book was announced I knew I had to read it. A heist story where they steal back cultural artefacts? Sign me the frick up.

Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth

2022 5 Star PredictionsSynopsis: A decade ago near Chicago, five teenagers defeated the otherworldly enemy known as the Dark One, whose reign of terror brought widespread destruction and death. The seemingly un-extraordinary teens—Sloane, Matt, Ines, Albie, and Esther—had been brought together by a clandestine government agency because one of them was fated to be the “Chosen One,” prophesized to save the world. With the goal achieved, humankind celebrated the victors and began to mourn their lost loved ones.

Ten years later, though the champions remain celebrities, the world has moved forward and a whole, younger generation doesn’t seem to recall the days of endless fear. But Sloane remembers. It’s impossible for her to forget when the paparazzi haunt her every step just as the Dark One still haunts her dreams. Unlike everyone else, she hasn’t moved on; she’s adrift—no direction, no goals, no purpose. On the eve of the Ten Year Celebration of Peace, a new trauma hits the Chosen: the death of one of their own. And when they gather for the funeral at the enshrined site of their triumph, they discover to their horror that the Dark One’s reign never really ended.

This one might not seem like it’s up my alley, but I think it’ll be a refreshing change of pace. I do enjoy Veronica Roth’s writing, and the premise just sounds so intriguing. Something about the “after”, like after the heroes beat the bad guy, is just fascinating. We don’t see it often, so I think this book will be something different.

A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee

2022 5 Star PredictionsSynopsis: erched in the Catskill mountains, the centuries-old, ivy-covered campus was home until the tragic death of her girlfriend. Now, after a year away, she’s returned to graduate. She even has her old room in Godwin House, the exclusive dormitory rumoured to be haunted by the spirits of five Dalloway students—girls some say were witches. The Dalloway Five all died mysteriously, one after another, right on Godwin grounds.

Witchcraft is woven into Dalloway’s history. The school doesn’t talk about it, but the students do. In secret rooms and shadowy corners, girls convene. And before her girlfriend died, Felicity was drawn to the dark. She’s determined to leave that behind her now; all Felicity wants is to focus on her senior thesis and graduate. But it’s hard when Dalloway’s occult history is everywhere. And when the new girl won’t let her forget.

It’s Ellis Haley’s first year at Dalloway, and she’s already amassed a loyal following. A prodigy novelist at seventeen, Ellis is a so-called “method writer.” She’s eccentric and brilliant, and Felicity can’t shake the pull she feels to her. So when Ellis asks Felicity for help researching the Dalloway Five for her second book, Felicity can’t say no. Given her history with the arcane, Felicity is the perfect resource.

And when history begins to repeat itself, Felicity will have to face the darkness in Dalloway–and in herself.

This book has been on my radar for a while, but I’m hoping to get to it soon. Dark academia, no thoughts just vibes, SAPPHICS? YES PLEASE!

Far From the Light of Heaven by Tade Thompson

2022 5 Star PredictionsSynopsis: The colony ship Ragtime docks in the Lagos system, having travelled light-years to bring one thousand sleeping souls to a new home among the stars. But when first mate Michelle Campion rouses, she discovers some of the sleepers will never wake.

Answering Campion’s distress call, investigator Rasheed Fin is tasked with finding out who is responsible for these deaths. Soon a sinister mystery unfolds aboard the gigantic vessel, one that will have repercussions for the entire system—from the scheming politicians of Lagos station to the colony planet Bloodroot, to other far-flung systems, and indeed to Earth itself.

There’s something about space mysteries that just has me completely hooked. I love sci-fi, I will read it in any form. This book sounds amazing, and I cannot wait to read it.
