August Reading Wrap-Up

Can you believe it’s almost Christmas? Yeah, me neither. August went by in a blur. I’m finally settled into my new apartment and I got a lot done this month. Let’s jump into my August Reading Warp-Up!

August Reading Wrap-Up: What I Read in August

The Devil Makes Three by Tori Bovalino

The Devil Makes Three was a big surprise for me this year. I hadn’t specifically planned to read it, but then I ended up getting an eARC for it. So I jumped in immediately. It was a creepy academia book and I loved it. Check out my review below!

The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I have been waiting for The Hawthrone Legacy since reading The Inheritance Games. If you love mysteries with a Knives Out meets Cinderella type of vibe, this is it. The Hawthorne Legacy was fast-paced and fun. I’m not a big fan of this duology turning into a trilogy, but I can live with it.

10 Reasons to Read The Inheritance Games

Of Silver and Shadow by Jennifer Gruenke

This was a reread of one of my favourite books of 2020. Of Silver and Shadow has enemies to lovers, a rebellion, and a badass female protagonist. I highly recommend you check it out if you want more New Adult fantasy.

Midnight Water City by Chris McKinney

This was a LibroFM ALC I received for July, but I only got to it in August. It wasn’t a bad read by any means, but it’s not entirely up my alley. Midnight Water City follows a retired cop who is tired of life, trying to solve the murder of one of his closest friends. It’s very noir detective, meets Altered Carbon. If that’s your speed, check it out below!

For The Wolf by Hannah Whitten

The first daughter is for the Throne.
The second daughter is for the Wolf.

This was our book club pick for August and I’m not mad about it. I liked For The Wolf. It didn’t blow me away though, and the beginning was definitely stronger than the ending. The sequel has some potential, so I will be continuing with the series.

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle

When your nemesis also happens to be your fiancé, happily ever after becomes a lot more complicated in this wickedly funny, lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy debut.

This was just a fun book I read to take a break between heavier fantasy books. You Deserve Each Other won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but I enjoyed it. The end of the book really pulled on my heartstrings. If you want a cute romance filled with some questionable behaviour, this is it.

House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland

House of Hollow was definitely the weirdest book I read this month. Its sort of a portal fantasy book meets mystery thriller. It didn’t really know what it wanted to be and eventually, I got bored of the descriptions. Review to come later in September!

And there you have it, my August Reading Wrap-Up!

August ARCs

I didn’t request many arcs in August, which helps my Netgalley ratio.

  • Lakesedge by Lyndall Clipstone
  • The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

There you go! I’d say August was a good month.
