June Reading Wrap-Up: Books I Read in June

June was a much better reading month than May. I’m settled into my job a bit more and I have some more time to read. Let’s see what I read in June.

The Night Country by Melissa Albert

I absolutely loved The Hazel Wood. It was one of the first books I bought when I started bookstagram in 2018. I never had time to get around to the sequel, but luckily a friend gave it to me for my birthday. The Night Country follows Alice’s journey as she tries to leave the Hinterland behind her. Twisted fairytales come to life in this book, and Alice realizes she’ll never be able to get rid of the Hinterland inside of her. There’s also an element of a murder mystery to this book. It is very atmospheric and creepy, which I really enjoyed.

The Box in the Woods by Maureen Johnson

June started off with murder mysteries it seems. The Box in the Woods is a standalone sequel to the Truly Devious series and I was so excited for this! This book was even featured on my Most Anticipated Books of 2021 list. Stevie Bell is back, and this time she’s solving murders at a summer camp. You can read my full review down below!

Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert

I had a good time with this romance novel. Act Your Age, Eve Brown is the final novel in the Brown Sister’s series and it did not disappoint. We follow Eve, who’s essentially a wild child, as she finds herself accepting a chef position at a small-town B&B. Jacob doesn’t like Eve, especially after she ran him over with her car. She feels obliged to help him run his B&B, and sparks fly between them. I listened to the audiobook of this and I was laughing out loud like a maniac in my car. This book is funny, sweet, and totally worth the read.

The Martian by Andy Weir

I have been wanting to read this book ever since I saw the movie. I love space and love Mars. So The Martian was right up my alley. It is better than the movie, but the movie sticks pretty close to the book. Overall, I’d say it’s my favourite book to movie adaption so far.

The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

Another audiobook, and the only book that really disappointed me in June. The Maidens follow a group therapist as she’s pulled into a series of murders at Cambridge University. I didn’t find it intriguing at all. The crime makes no sense and I found some sub-plots to be more interesting than the main story. This one just wasn’t for me.

Present Perfect by Julie Olivia

I totally mood read this book. I saw an Instagram Reel about it and I just immediately picked it up. Present Perfect is a super fluffy romance novel that follows Delaney as she starts a new job at Foxe Hill College. Enter a very handsome English Professor and shenanigans ensue. It’s a small town romance with some elements of forbidden love (my favorite kind) and I just really enjoyed it.

Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

I won’t say too much about this book since I’m on the blog tour later this month, but HOLY SMOKES. I LOVED IT. Six Crimson Cranes is definitely going to be one of my favorite reads this year. I am so excited to share my thoughts with you, so stay tuned!

  1. You sound like you had a fab June. I haven’t read any of the books you did this month but I do find them interesting. I also haven’t see the film The Martian either. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Ooh okay so I just started The Maidens (maybe 5% or so in) and I thought it’ll be really good but now I’m wary haha. Also, I’ve preordered (a custom spray-painted edition!) Six Crimson Cranes because everyone’s been raving about it and I can’t wait for it to arrive. Hope you have a great July!

    P. S. Thank you for including my post 🙂

  3. I’ve heard so many mixed comments on The Maidens and I’m nervous the listen to my alc lol. It sounds so good but easy to miss the mark, if that makes sense> I recently read The Box in the Woods and LOVED it.

Thanks for linking to my post & happy July!

  4. I love this june wrap-up! There are so many books here that are on my tbr so it was exciting seeing all of them especially Six Crimson Cranes! Thank you so much for the blog shoutout as well! <3

  5. I’m excited that you liked Six Crimson Cranes. It gives me something positive to look forward to especially since I’m getting ready to read it in time for the publication date.

It’s also hard for me to stick to book buying bans! There are always so many books coming out nearly weekly and waiting on the library to have new releases available feels like a life time. Because I also violate my book buying bans, it’s okay that you do to! Ha…It makes me feel better so I hope that makes you feel better. LOL.

  6. Looks like you had a good month. I loved The Maidens. However, I read rather than listened to it.

  7. You had such a great reading month! And I’m SO glad you loved Six Crimson Cranes as much as I did. It’s one of my favorites so far too! I can’t wait to see how July goes for you 🙂

  8. This summer has been all about murder mysteries for me! I can’t seem to get enough. I have added “The Box in the Woods” to my TBR pile (thank you for the recommendation!). I thought I would share my favorite read (so far) this summer. It’s called “The Glass Alibi” by John Burns(http://www.theglassalibi.com/) This book had me hooked from start to finish. It’s an “investigation gone wrong” crime noir fiction that really delivers on all fronts. I loved the main character (a bored “gumshoe” named Nick) and the premise was so cool and interesting. I really enjoyed wondering what Nick would run into next as he finds himself picking his way through the seedy upper tiers of San Francisco “high society.” I never felt like any of it was out of the realm of possibility. It is one of those books where anything is possible and you never know what will come next! A really fun and thoughtful summer read! If you check it out let me know what you think. Happy Summer Reading everyone!
