My 2023 Reading Goals

My 2023 Reading Goals

Another year, another chance to set some reading goals! I’m just going to start off by saying that I did not meet any of my 2022 reading goals. Like not one. Yes, I am disappointed too.

So I’ve decided to take a different approach to my 2023 reading goals. Let’s jump in!

My 2023 Reading Goals

Instead of making a 10 Books to Read in 2023 post, I’ve decided to pick 10 prompts to fulfill instead. They are in no particular order, but here are my prompts:

  1. Read a non-fiction book
  2. Binge-read a series
  3. Finish a series
  4. Read a romance book
  5. Read a dark academia book
  6. Read a book set in space
  7. One word title
  8. Colour in the title
  9. Enemies to lovers trope
  10. A mystery/thriller

I think these are very attainable goals. If I can manage these this year, I can look at setting some more goals in 2024.

How did I do in 2022?

I also want to wrap up my 2022 reading and take a look at some of the trends in my reading this year. (Spoiler, there was a lot of romance!)

10 Books to Read in 2022

I am happy to report that I read 7/10 books on my 2022 list. Which is shocking.

  • The Burning God by R.F. Kuang – Read (and loved it!)
  • Scythe by Neal Schusterman – Not read
  • The Hating Game by Sally Thorne – Read it
  • To Be Taught if Fortunate by Becky Chambers (loved it so much)
  • Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire – read it
  • Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li – read it and reviewed it!
  • Master of Sorrows by Justin T. Call – ended up DNFing it
  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – did not read it
  • Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth – also DNF’d it, review here!
  • Tempest and Slaughter by Tamora Pierce – did not even attempt it.

Reading my 5-Star Predictions

At the start of 2022 I made a 5-star predictions list. I was going to blog about each book individually, but I didn’t get to it. I did read the whole list, so here are some of my thoughts!

Mr Wrong Number by Lynn Painter – 3.5 Stars

When I read the synopsis of Mr. Wrong Number I was immediately excited. I was hoping it would be a 5-star read, but unfortunately not. It took me like two weeks to read the first 20% because I really disliked Olivia. She had no respect for the boundaries and property of others. If she behaved as she did in this book towards me, I would cut off that friendship so fast.

The only thing that saved this book was Colin. I really liked his character and his POV. I wish we got more of him. He made me root for their relationship and by the end, I was really invested (hence the 3.5 stars). The ending felt a bit rushed, which is something I’ve generally picked up in romance. Overall this was a good book if you can look past Olivia.

Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li – 3 Stars

Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth – 4 Stars

This is probably the highest-rated book on this list. Which is disappointing. Chosen Ones was not disappointing though. The story takes a few weird turns, but overall I really enjoyed it. I love a hero turned villain and a story that deals with what happens after the world is saved. I liked the characters, and Roth managed to pull some emotions out of me. Overall, this was a good read.

A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee – 4 Stars

It’s not often that I say this, because I believe that the YA group needs stories like this too. But it feels like being in the YA category held this book back. I really enjoyed it, the dark academia vibes were there and Lee’s writing grabbed me and did not let me go. But it felt like it was supposed to be set at university, but YA forced it into boarding school. It was good, I just wish it was adult.

Far From the Light of Heaven by Tade Thompson – 3.5 Stars

There’s a pretty good chance of me enjoying any sci-fi you put in front of me. Especially sci-fi locked room mysteries. The synopsis of Far From the Light of Heaven sounded so good, I had high hopes for it being a 5-star. And I wasn’t entirely wrong. I loved the plot and I was completely hooked on the mystery. However, the writing took some getting used to and I didn’t feel for the characters as much as I should have. I do think the worldbuilding was excellent, and I loved all the space talk and techno-babble. I would definitely suggest this to anyone who loves space and mysteries.

2022 Statistics

Star Ratings

Overall 2022 was a better reading year than 2021 in terms of my average ratings. I gave out many more 4 and 5 stars than 3 stars. Almost every book I read in November/December was 4 stars, so yay me.

My 2023 Reading Goals

Formats

2022 was the year of the audiobook, which makes sense. I have chronic migraines and my eyes are a little wonky, so it makes sense that audiobooks would be my most-read format.

Age Range & Genres

Unsurprisingly, I read more adult books in 2022. This corresponds with me reading more sci-fi and more romance.

  1. ok but “a hero turned villain and a story that deals with what happens after the world is saved”??? So look. I’ve never really read anything by Veronica Roth before (the divergent synopses BORE ME?? plus am also not the biggest dystopia fan SO) BUT THIS SOUNDS RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING??? I NEED OK.

Yayy on so many 4 + 5 stars though AMAZING BOOKS THAT OUTDO PERFECTION ARE THE BEST THINGS EVER CREATED.

Reading this was so much fun (ALL YOUR POSTS ALWAYS ARE TBH) and I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!! good luck with all the goals AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! HERES TO HOPING ITS A PHENOMENAL ONE ❤️🥳

    1. Thank youuuuuuu <3 <3 <3
You have to try Chosen Ones! It was so good (also Veronica Roth's new book, Poster Girl, sounds AMAZING, even tho it's dystopian)

  2. I think it’s wonderful that you’re using prompts to encourage your reading habits this year. That’s really creative! I’ve considered using one of the prompt challenges on StoryGraph, but honestly, it makes me a little nervous haha. Who knows, maybe I’ll wind up doing it after all now that I’ve been inspired by this post!

    1. I’m hoping it’ll help me stick to my reading goals better. Let me know if you do try it 🙂

  3. Happy (belated) New Year! I like your 10 prompts challenge. Have you read BABEL? Might be a good fit for your dark academia prompt, especially know that you are done with The Poppy War 🙂

    1. I haven’t read Babel yet, so it’s definitely a good option for a dark academia! I have Bunny & Catherine House on my TBR as well.

  4. Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth sounds so cool?! I feel like I haven’t really noticed it before this post, which is odd. It’s definitely going in my TBR.

Good luck with your goals and I hope you have a great 2023!
