The Contradictions Book Tag

Hey there friends, I hope you’re having an awesome week. It’s a public holiday here in SA, so I thought I would do the contradictions book tag. It’s been a minute since I’ve done a tag and I am super excited for this one. You can check out the original post here. Let’s jump in!

The Contradictions Book Tag

1) I love this genre but I didn’t like this book

I love sci-fi. It’s one of my favourite genres and can be very wholesome when done right. I thought I was going to love Victories Greater than Death by Charlie Jane Anders, but I was wrong. Victories Greater than Death follows Tina, the clone of a famous interstellar warrior, as she grows up on earth, waiting to be rescued. Her destiny is to save the galaxy, and with the help of her quirky friends, she just might do it.

Maybe my hopes for this book was too high, but I was expecting a thrilling space adventure, instead, I got a bunch of 10-year-olds being “quirky” in space. This one was just not for me.

2) I rarely read this genre but I loved this book

I rarely read literary fiction/contemporaries, but this year a few books in this category surprised me. The biggest surprise was Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney. I read Normal People earlier this year and it was okay. Beautiful People really blew me away. Sally Rooney called me out with her characters’ existential dread and I loved every minute of it.

My review for this book is coming in 2022!

3) I love this trope but I didn’t like this book

Enemies to lovers is the ultimate trope in my eyes, but very few people do it well. That’s why I was so disappointed in Lakesedge by Lyndall Clipstone. It was supposed to be this gothic horror filled with pining and angst, but instead, we got the opposite.

You can read my full review of Lakesedge below.

4) I hate this trope but I loved this book

I’m not the biggest fan of “the chosen one” or “it’s your destiny” tropes, but I can make an exception for For The Wolf by Hannah Whitten. This is a Red Riding Hood meets Beauty and the Beast retelling. The second daughter gets sacrificed to the Wolf to keep the Wilderwood and the monsters within at bay. But not all is what it seems.

This was one of our Read Better Book Club picks and I enjoyed it. I’m eager to see where the second book is going to go.

5) I love this author but I didn’t like this book

I love Kerri Maniscalco’s writing, but Capturing the Devil did not do it for me. This is the final book in the Stalking Jack the Ripper series and I was disappointed. The characters face no consequences for their actions in the third book and most of the story was about Audrey Rose and Thomas, with the mystery and the killer only getting like 15% page-time. It wasn’t a solid ending and I wish this series was one or even two books shorter.

6) I previously disliked a book by this author but I loved this book

I don’t have any second chance authors. The only one I can think of is Victoria Schwab. I didn’t enjoy A Darker Shade of Magic or Addie LaRue that much, but Vicious was a tad better. Overall I don’t think she’s the author for me.

7) I love this cover but I didn’t like this book

The cover for Witches Steeped in Gold is absolutely gorgeous. Too bad I did not like the book at all. Looking back, I’m surprised I finished it. It was not at all what I was expecting, and not at all what the synopsis indicated. Someone did this book dirty, either the marketing team or the publisher, but it was bad.

8) I don’t like this cover but I loved this book

I’m not the biggest fan of the movie-tie in covers for The Martian. Neither am I a fan of the cover with an actual person on it. Unfortunately, the original cover is hard to find. But I really loved The Martian. The movie is one of my comfort movies, and I greatly enjoyed the book. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly suggest you do.

  1. This is such a fun tag! I enjoyed Victories Greater Than Death, but it sure wasn’t the book I expected it to be. I guess I was lucky I was in the mood for all the chaos it brought me, but I had a great time reading it (but don’t ask me to remember anything that happened in detail, it kind of felt like a fun fever dream). I don’t read a lot of romances or at least I never used to think of myself as a romance reader, but so far I’ve enjoyed both Beach Read and People We Meet On Vacation and a few YA romances immensely!

    1. I’ve definitely turned into a romance reader. Sometimes you just need something happy and fluffy lol.

  2. Oh wow I really like this tag and might have to do it myself in 2022! I am sad to see Lakesedge’s romance wasn’t what you expect of the genre (that doesn’t bode well for my reading it).

Vicious is literally the only book by Victoria Schwab that I enjoyed. I’ve read a bunch of them and have come to decide the way her writing has changed since Vicious is just not for me. Stinks but oh well. At least I am not alone!
