Goodreads Description: Saoirse doesn’t believe in love at first sight or happy endings. If they were real, her mother would still be able to remember her name and not in a care home with early-onset dementia. A condition that Saoirse may one day turn out to have inherited. So she’s not looking for a relationship. She doesn’t see the point in igniting any romantic sparks if she’s bound to burn out.

But after a chance encounter at an end-of-term house party, Saoirse is about to break her own rules. For a girl with one blue freckle, an irresistible sense of mischief, and a passion for romcoms.

Unbothered by Saoirse’s no-relationships rulebook, Ruby proposes a loophole: They don’t need true love to have one summer of fun, complete with every cliché, rom-com montage-worthy date they can dream up—and a binding agreement to end their romance come fall. It would be the perfect plan if they weren’t forgetting one thing about the Falling in Love Montage: when it’s over, the characters actually fall in love… for real.

Review

Story

I enjoyed this story so much. It warms my heart to read stories about LGBTQ+ joy. This is not a coming-out story, or a story dealing with hate towards the LGBTQ+ community. And while those stories are extremely important, it’s also important to read stories about joy. This is just a story about two girls falling in love.

And it is funny. I laughed out loud on multiple occasions and just found myself enjoying this book fully. The story contains many rom-com tropes and all of them were hilarious and expertly done.

There are also many heartbreaking and touching moments, making me feel all of the feels.

Writing

The writing was really clear and easy to follow. I often forgot that I was actually reading, it was that good. Also, I really enjoyed the setting. The slang was hard to understand at times, and I had to Google a few things, but I still enjoyed it.

Characters

Saoirse is such a relatable character. I felt all of her pain, and I know a thing or two about writing friends off and feeling like the world is against you. I really enjoyed her character arc and her growth.

The best thing to come out of this book is the bromance between Saoirse and Oliver. Oliver is a snarky rich boy and the banter between them is golden. I live for it. Ruby is also an amazing character and I love how she’s the opposite of Saoirse and yet they still click.

I will say I was not a fan of the ending, but I won’t say anything because of spoilers.

Let me know your thoughts on The Falling in Love Montage.

  1. Lovely review! I’m glad you enjoyed this one. I’m sure the dementia topic could be hard for some to read.
