Worth It? Serpent & Dove

Is it Worth the Hype? Serpent & Dove

Hi friends! I’ve gone on a semi-hiatus from blogging and social media, and I’ve really been enjoying it. However I still want to post about once a week, so here we are. This week I’m starting a new segment on my blog called Worth It. This is where I review books that are either ridiculously overhyped or criminally underrated. This week I do Worth It: Serpent & Dove.

In case you’ve missed it, a LOT of people love this book. Now I’m not doing this to be mean, or to talk down on your favourite books. Once again, these are my personal opinions. You can differ from them and that’s perfectly fine.

Alright, let’s dive in!

Goodreads Description: Bound as one to love, honour, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

Story

Honestly, this book is such a hot mess. I didn’t like any of the characters and the pacing was really clumsy. The whole last 100 pages of Serpent & Dove should have been the first 100 of the next book.
The whole forced marriage trope was super very flimsy. I’m a BIG fan of enemies to lovers, but enemies to lovers who actually know that they’re supposed to hate each other. The love story was just not up my alley. They go from hating each other to loving each other within one page.

My face was a question mark while reading this. The humour also lands very poorly. Honestly, I just finished this book because the sex scene was really good and page 300-380 was really entertaining.

Worldbuilding

The worldbuilding is all over the place. Now I’m from a third world country so excuse me if my European geography is bad, but does this book take place in actual France or fictional France? A map would have been nice. It’s supposed to be medieval France but they use modern slang words? Wtf?

Characters

Let’s talk about Lou. Now I’m not saying she’s totally awful, but she’s awful. To me, she’s a combination of some very harmful feminist stereotypes. She’s played off against this other girl called Celie, who is the exact opposite of Lou. I think we’re past playing two women off against each other.

Reid was a cutie at times though, I’ll give him that.

All in all, I played myself in reading this book because it was not good. So, was Serpent & Dove worth it? Not in my opinion.

Let me know your thoughts on Serpent & Dove.

  1. I think it was only because of our epic buddy read that I didn’t tear my eyes out from all the bs on all the pages😂

  2. Sorry it wasn’t great for you, I think I enjoyed it I tried to find it on my blog but for some reason I can’t find my review . Great post/review

  3. Thanks for sharing! It’s always a let down when a book so many people love falls flat for me. Also, I love the pictures you include!

  4. I’m so sorry this one didn’t work for you! I really enjoyed it but I do agree that the world building is very flimsy and confusing, a map would be really nice! I’m also glad to hear some Reid love here, he’s so underrated! 🥺
