Goodreads Description:

Juliet Seven is waiting on a seacraft offshore from war-torn Mangeria, hoping that her beloved Nicolas will soon join her. Instead, the boat is pirated by a Reject boy stinking of rot and oil. A storm rises and they are swept away. They reach a new land, but all is not what it seems in this perfect place of refuge. Juliet is desperate to escape. Since the day of her birth, the blind tellers of Mangeria have prophesied that Juliet is ‘The One’. What will she have to do to fulfil her destiny?

General Thoughts

I struggle in general with books written by South African authors. I have no idea why, and I cannot put it into words, but the writing just annoys me.  It just feels weird. The writing, in general, isn’t deep enough. I could not connect to any of the characters and reading the first few chapters just made me feel awful.

The Reject is a follow-up book to The Mark, which is relatively popular and is even a prescribed book in some schools. I haven’t read The Mark, and I have a feeling I’m not going to. I simply didn’t enjoy The Reject enough to actually go read the first book.

Juliet annoyed me to no end. Her internal monologue was so…I felt like I was reading the thoughts of a robot. There was no emotion, no feeling, no depth to her. And the rest of the characters are just gross, with no real personalities.

The world building was weird as well. More thought could have been put into the terminology and general feel of the world. Overall, I DNF’d at 50 pages.

Recommendation

The Mark is considered a ground-breaking dystopian novel. I definitely recommend that you give it a read if you enjoy dystopian.

  1. I don’t believe I’ve read anything by South African writers, at least not that I’m aware of. I’ll pay attention from now on. I do appreciate your honest reviews!
