First Bookish Impressions: Lore, War Girls & Skyhunter

Hello friends! Welcome back to the second instalment of First Bookish Impressions! This week I review samplers for Lore, War Girls, and Skyhunter! I really enjoyed reading the first few chapters of all of these books, so here are my thoughts on them!

Lore by Alexandra Bracken

First Bookish ImpressionsWhat’s it about? Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals, hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality.
Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world in the wake of her family’s sadistic murder by a rival line, turning her back on the hunt’s promises of eternal glory. For years she’s pushed away any thought of revenge against the man–now a god–responsible for their deaths.

Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek out her help. Castor, a childhood friend of Lore believed long dead, and a gravely wounded Athena, among the last of the original gods.

The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and, at last, a way for Lore to leave the Agon behind forever. But Lore’s decision to bind her fate to Athena’s and rejoin the hunt will come at a deadly cost–and still may not be enough to stop the rise of a new god with the power to bring humanity to its knees.

My Thoughts: I have some difficulty with Bracken’s writing. It just reads hard and I never get a good grip on what the characters are doing or the geography of the scene. I did enjoy the story and the plot though. It’s an interesting concept and I would love to read more of it.

I think this book could have benefitted from a first-person POV, especially where the world-building is concerned. I mainly want to read more to find out what happened to Castor.  You can bet there’s a really good romance that’ll happen between Lore and Castor. Also, who doesn’t love Greek Gods? Let’s say I’m like 75% interested in reading further.

War Girls by Tochi Onyebuchi

First Bookish ImpressionsWhat’s it about? The year is 2172. Climate change and nuclear disasters have rendered much of earth unlivable. Only the lucky ones have escaped to space colonies in the sky.

In a war-torn Nigeria, battles are fought using flying, deadly mechs and soldiers are outfitted with bionic limbs and artificial organs meant to protect them from the harsh, radiation-heavy climate. Across the nation, as the years-long civil war wages on, survival becomes the only way of life.

Two sisters, Onyii and Ify, dream of more. Their lives have been marked by violence and political unrest. Still, they dream of peace, of hope, of a future together.

And they’re willing to fight an entire war to get there.

My thoughts: I must have this book in its entirety immediately. The worldbuilding is absolutely stunning. I need this Nigerian inspired dystopian in my life. Onyebuchi immediately pulls you in with her writing and her unique world. I have to know more. This sampler ended on a cliffhanger, so I’m so curious as to what happens next.

The characters also immediately pulled me in. I love the relationship between Onyii and Ify, and I can’t wait to see how their bond grows. The only slight issue I have is the age of the characters. They were a lot older in my brain, but it doesn’t make the book less great. It’s a YA book, so I’m not complaining too much.

This book deserves so much more hype and I will be giving it that hype. READ THIS.

Skyhunter by Marie Lu

First Bookish ImpressionsWhat’s it about? The Karensa Federation has conquered a dozen countries, leaving Mara as one of the last free nations in the world. Refugees flee to its borders to escape a fate worse than death―transformation into mutant war beasts known as Ghosts, creatures the Federation then sends to attack Mara.

The legendary Strikers, Mara’s elite fighting force, are trained to stop these monsters. But as the number of Ghosts grows and Karensa closes in, defeat seems inevitable.

Still, one Striker refuses to give up hope.

Robbed of her voice and home, Talin Kanami knows firsthand the brutality of the Federation. Their cruelty forced her and her mother to seek asylum in a country that finds their people repugnant. She finds comfort only with a handful of fellow Strikers who have pledged their lives to one another, soldiers determined to push Karensa back at all costs.

After another devastating battle, Mara seems ready to fall. But when a mysterious prisoner is brought from the front, Talin senses there’s more to him than meets the eye. Is he a spy from the Federation? Or could he be the weapon that will save them all?

My thoughts: I ABSOLUTELY 100% need this book RIGHT NOW. Sorry for the caps. Marie Lu is quickly becoming my favourite author. I loved The Kingdom of Back and I am so excited for Skyhunter. Her writing is flawless and so fluent and she made me care for the characters within the first few pages.

She just went ahead and ripped my heart out. Thanks. I think Skyhunter is now my most anticipated release of the year. I will sell my soul for a copy of this book. May the book gods smile on me today.

All of these books made really good First Bookish Impressions. Are you excited to read any of these?
