Goodreads Description: Jules Ember was raised hearing legends of the ancient magic of the wicked Alchemist and the good Sorceress. But she has just learned the truth: not only are the stories true, but she herself is the Alchemist, and Caro—a woman who single-handedly murdered the Queen and Jules’s first love, Roan, in cold blood—is the Sorceress.

The whole kingdom believes that Jules is responsible for the murders, and a hefty bounty has been placed on her head. And Caro is intent on destroying Jules, who stole her heart twelve lifetimes ago. Jules must delve into the stories that she now recognizes are accounts of her own past. For it is only by piecing together the mysteries of her lives that Jules will be able to save the person who has captured her own heart in this one.

Review PolicyGeneral Thoughts

I was excited when I received this book. I absolutely adored Everless and I couldn’t wait for Jules’ story to continue. The world-building was crazy good in the first book, but this one seemed to step away from the workings of the world. Time as a currency wasn’t such a big deal in this book, and it really irked me.

This was still a good read, but the plot veered off a bit. Everless’ main plot point was using blood and time for currency. That was never even mentioned in Evermore. The plot progressed slowly and consisted of a lot of travel. Holland introduced many characters throughout the books that had great stories, but we never got to explore those stories.

Nothing actually happened for most of the book, but overall I still enjoyed it. The writing is great and flows smoothly, and Liam is one of my favourite characters. All in all, it didn’t live up to the first book, but it was a good ending to the story.

CharactersCharacters

Allow me to swoon over Liam for a while. He’s dark, grumpy, smart as hell and the perfect anti-hero. He’s set up as the villain in Everless, but we learn that he’s actually on Jules’ side. I loved their relationship and I was rooting for it. I wish we could have gotten a POV from him as well.

Jules seems a bit like the typical YA-heroine. She annoys me through most of the book when we could have been grated a Liam, Elias AND INA’S POV. I’m so salty about it. Each of these characters had their own arcs, but instead, we just got Jules mucking about the country. I need another book that fixes this one.

  3. I haven’t read this one because I already had very mixed feelings about Everless, so I wasn’t sure whether it was worth continuing with the series. I’m glad you still enjoyed this book, even if it wasn’t as good as the first one. From what you describe, though, I think it’s going to be a pass for me!
