YELLS

SOBS

I loved everything about this book. It reminded me of the Goosebumps I read as a child, only it was more dark, creepy and dangerous. I loved the setup, the Glass Vault and the characters. Robinson pulled my heart out and stepped on it, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I could rave about this book forever if someone let me. The characters are well crafted, the story flows excellently and the descriptions are beautifully macabre.

This book made me nostalgic for my childhood, curled up with a scary book, and made me fear adulting all over again. If you enjoy books with twist endings, and oh boy do I mean TWIST ENDINGS, unpredictable plots and lovable characters, this is the book for you.

If I wasn’t reading this book on my phone, I would have thrown it out of a window. My jaw dropped at the end. Never has a book ever had this good of an unpredictable twist. I absolutely loved it!

CharsCharacters

Perrie is a wonderful character and reminds me of my best friend, who is also a horror movie enthusiast. She’s just a normal teenager, dealing with annoying ex-boyfriends and eccentric cousins. Sometimes I felt like her behaviour was a little off, I mean a teenager without a smartphone? Other than that weird quirk I found her to be a lovable character.

Maisie, Perrie’s cousin and best friend, was by far my favourite character. She’s quirky, possibly asexual or pansexual, artsy, and wears eyepatches. Yes, you heard me, eyepatches. How cool is that? I love it. She made me wish I had a female cousin (I have only male cousins) to be best friends with. Her relationship with Perrie is sweet and they care deeply for each other. #GirlPower.

August is Perrie’s former enemy turned friend, turned lover. He was the perfect guy. In hindsight, he was perhaps too perfect, but spoilers. The way he took care of Perrie and the way he always supported her, I wish I had an August. The way he calls Perrie “doll face” just makes me melt. I’m so mad at him. Spoilers.

Neven was a fun character as well, even though we didn’t get to see much of him. At first, I thought he was a complete jerk, but then the ending happened and well…spoilers again. I found all of the characters to be well rounded and thought out. I really enjoyed going on this creepy journey with them.

Spoilers

Spoilers

I’m serious about the spoilers. I am about to give away the twist ending. You have been warned.

OMG AUGUST. I was freaking out. I had no inkling that August was the bad guy, and it was revealed in the most heartbreaking way, mind you. August was the perfect guy, he cared for Perrie, he was always there for her, and then he had to go and be the bad guy. I love it and hate it at the same time. Best twist ending ever.

The Glass Vault was also beautifully constructed. Each scene in the Vault was terrifying but at the same time, I felt right at home, mainly because they were scenes I was familiar with. I binge watch Sleepy Hollow regularly, I have all the Jack the Ripper case files and I love fairytales. It felt like this book was written just for me and I love it when authors manage to pull you into stories completely. I need the second book, ASAP.

Story Plot

Story & Plot

The tone at the start of the book was not as sinister and dark as the end. Robinson does a great job of introducing the characters and making us like them, and I felt like the contrast between the lighter tone at the start of the book and the darker one at the end was done beautifully. These characters don’t live “dark” lives. They are happy, and the tone conveys that. After they fall into the Glass Vault, the tone shifts to a darker tone to accommodate all the horrors that happen to Perrie.

The story is fast-paced and I didn’t feel the need to skip over any scenes. Overall this is a beautifully written story and I truly enjoyed it.
