Hello, book dragons! I hope you’re all good. I’ve been putting this review off for some time now for no real reason. I finished this book in March and kept pushing the post back for more recent books. Not anymore! I hope you enjoy The Disasters book review!

Format: Paperback
Genre: Science Fiction
Publisher: Harper Collins
Date Published: 18 December 2018
Goodreads Description: Hotshot pilot Nax Hall has a history of making poor life choices. So it’s not exactly a surprise when he’s kicked out of the elite Ellis Station Academy in less than twenty-four hours.
But Nax’s one-way trip back to Earth is cut short when a terrorist group attacks the Academy. Nax and three other washouts escape—barely—but they’re also the sole witnesses to the biggest crime in the history of space colonization. And the perfect scapegoats.
On the run and framed for atrocities they didn’t commit, Nax and his fellow failures execute a dangerous heist to spread the truth about what happened at the Academy. They may not be “Academy material,” and they may not get along, but they’re the only ones left to step up and fight.
I received a review copy from Jonathan Ball Publishers. All opinions are my own.
Story
The Disasters was such a fun ride. I love sci-fi books and this one was no exception. The Disasters was a quick and easy read with a fast-paced plot that had you on the edge of your seat. However, I felt like this was a “soft” sci-fi, and I definitely enjoy “hard” sci-fi more. Give me all the technobabble and warp core explanations and fun science things.
The science in science fiction books (especially when it’s whacky science) is what I live for and I wanted to see more of it in The Disasters.
Writing
My biggest complaint would be the writing style. It felt like this book was purposefully holding itself back, and that the writing had been standardised to attract a younger audience. All of the characters in the book were around 18/19, but they were written like 15/16-year-olds.
Other than that, the book had some very cool aspects. The world-building was amazing and I loved seeing the different colonies and worlds. I felt like we could have spent some more time at the Academy, but it probably would have killed the pacing.
Characters
Another thing I really loved was the diversity of the characters. Each of them had their own story and came from their own (troubling) backgrounds. I’m not a fan of love triangles (never will be) but this one wasn’t executed badly.
I definitely recommend reading this wild space ride!
Let me know your thoughts on The Disasters.
Juvenile characters are often difficult for me to appreciate.
