20 Books to Read in 2020

So January has been 10000 years long, but the end is finally in sight. With that, I’m hoping to get back into blogging in February, but my schedule is still crazy. I’m hoping to read more books this year than last year, so I’ve decided to make a list of 20 books to read in 2020. I tried sticking to books that I already own because I want to work more on my TBR this year. Let’s jump in with 20 books to read in 2020.

20. The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

I’ve had the whole series since last year, and I’ve read the first book and enjoyed it. I just never got around to reading the rest of the series, even though it’s very beloved by two of my close friends. I’m hoping to get to the rest of the series this year.

19. Wundersmith by Jessica Townsend

This is a middle-grade book that’s been compared to Harry Potter for its magic and whimsy. It’s the story of a cursed child who gets whisked away to a magical country. I wish I could have grown up with a book like this, but I’ll settle for reading it as an adult.

18. The Falconer Series by Elizabeth May

I bought this series at a book sale last year and I’m planning to buddy read it with a friend. The series is described as: this electrifying thriller combines romance and action, steampunk technology and Scottish lore in a deliciously addictive read. Once again, historical fiction mixed with fantasy, sign me right up!

17. The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen

I received the Fairyloot edition of this book and it is gorgeous. I’m not entirely sure what it’s about, but the description includes a fugitive prince, a future chieftain and a cunning bodyguard. I’m here for it.

16. Skyward by Brandon Sanderson

I really enjoy sci-fi reads and this one has been on my TBR for way too long. A friend of mine recently read it and speaks very highly of it, so I’m moving it up my TBR for sure.

15. Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey

Sometimes you just need a steamy romance to cleanse your palette. This one includes a fake dating trope and tons of steamy scenes (or so I’m told) and I am here for it.

14. Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popović

I’ve been wanting to read this since 2018. I was lucky enough to be sent a review copy of the second book, so I just had to seize the opportunity to now read the first book as well.

13. Of Silver and Shadow by Jennifer Gruenke

I received an ARC of this one through Netgalley. All I know about it is that it’s about a rebellion in a Russian inspired world. Sign me up.

12. Children of Virtue & Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi

I got a signed edition of this book thanks to the lovely Tash @ The BCase and I couldn’t be more excited for the sequel to Children of Blood and Bone. I’m hoping this one lives up to the hype.

11. The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller

Alessandra has a plan:

1) Woo the Shadow King

2) Marry Him

3) Kill him and steal his Kingdom.

How can you not want to read this book with that description? It’s also a 2020 release but I just must read it.

20 Books to Read in 202010. Song of Sorrow by Melinda Salisbury

I loved State of Sorrow so much. I received the first book in a Fairyloot box and I devoured it. It was one of my favourite reads of 2018. I actually preordered Song of Sorrow, but it never arrived (thank you South African Postal Service). Mieke was kind enough to get me another copy, so I can’t wait to read this conclusion to State of Sorrow.

9. Woven in Moonlight by Isabel Ibañez

I don’t know much about this one, other than it’s inspired by Bolivian politics and history and that it releases in January. The cover is stunning and I’m super excited to read this one. Sometimes you just have to go in blind on a book.

8. The Secret History by Donna Tartt

I was kinda disappointed by Ninth House, and I need some more dark academia in my life. I’ve been wanting to read The Secret History forever.

7. The Winter Duke by Claire Eliza Bartlett

I was lucky enough to be chosen for the blog tour for The Winter Duke and I can’t wait to start reading. This is another royal fantasy, which is my bread and butter. It’s described as part Sleeping Beauty, part Anastasia (one of my favourite stories) so I am here for it.

6. River of Royal Blood by Amanda Joy

Another royal fantasy, sorry not sorry. This is a North African inspired fantasy in which two sisters must fight to the death to win the crown. I got this one in a fairyloot box as well, and Penguin Random House SA was kind enough to send me a review copy as well. I really want to read more African inspired books, so this one is a high priority.

5. Capturing the Devil by Kerri Maniscalco

I’ve been putting off reading the final book in the Stalking Jack the Ripper series. This series combined two of my favourite things, true crime and witty male characters. Thomas Cresswell is bae. I don’t want this series to end.

4. Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

I know I’m late to the party. My dad has even read this book before I have, so I want to get to it ASAP. Now that the entire series is out, I feel like a binge read is appropriate.

3. King of Fools by Amanda Foody

Ace of Shades was the biggest surprise read of 2019. I wasn’t sure I would like the series, and I was a little worried it might be too similar to Six of Crows, but boy was I wrong. Ace of Shades was brilliant and I cannot wait to get to King of Fools.

2. Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

I’ve heard so many conflicting things about this book. Booktube seems to hate it, but Bookstagram loves it. The premise is right up my alley; enemies to lovers with a forced marriage between a witch and a witch hunter. YES PLEASE.

1. The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

This book has been getting a lot of hate and I do not understand it. Six of Crows is not the only heist book allowed to exist, and I could write a whole other post about how this community treats authors of colour. Just stop. I am super excited about this book and I’m hoping it will be one of my favourite reads for 2020.
