April 2021 Illumicrate Unboxing

I’m super excited about today’s post! Welcome to my April 2021 Illumicrate Unboxing! This box contains one of my favourite books of 2021 and I cannot wait to share it with you. Let’s jump in!

Read my In The Ravenous Dark review here!

I purchased this box by myself. All opinions are my own.

April 2021 Dearly Departed Illumicrate Box

I was fortunate enough to be able to get this box. Ever since it was announced I knew I had to get it because of the book. I waited for like three hours online to purchase it, and then I waited an extra three weeks because of shipping delays.

Those things aside, I really LOVE this box. Book boxes are often hit or miss for me, and I’m so glad this one was a hit. Let’s see what was in the box:

Featured Book: In the Ravenous Dark by A.M. Strickland

54017941Goodreads Description: In Thanopolis, those gifted with magic are assigned undead spirits to guard them—and control them. Ever since Rovan’s father died trying to keep her from this fate, she’s hidden her magic. But when she accidentally reveals her powers, she’s bound to a spirit and thrust into a world of palace intrigue and deception.

Desperate to escape, Rovan finds herself falling for two people she can’t fully trust: Lydea, a beguiling, rebellious princess; and Ivrilos, the handsome spirit with the ability to control Rovan, body, and soul.

Together, they uncover a secret that will destroy Thanopolis. To save them all, Rovan will have to start a rebellion in both the mortal world and the underworld, and find a way to trust the princess and spirit battling for her heart—if she doesn’t betray them first.

A pansexual bloodmage reluctantly teams up with an undead spirit to start a rebellion among the living and the dead.

Book of the Dead Book Pot

The book pot is an Illumicrate staple and I’m so impressed with this one. The artwork was designed by ChattyNora and it is stunning. I’m going to use this book pot for bookmarks, and maybe as a TBR pot in the future.

Jacques’ Mason Jar

This is a souvenir glass from Jacques’ restaurant from The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh. I have since given up on reading The Beautiful (it’s not for me) but the mason jar is still stunning.

Sickle Keyring

The keyring is the one item in this box I’m not impressed with. Inspired by Dread Nation, you can barely see the quote on the sickle and it is very tiny. I feel like more effort should have been put into this product.

Too Many Books Organiser

Nevernight inspired the canvas book organiser. Illumicrate never addressed the Jay Kristoff problems (as far as I know), which is truly disappointing. In this case, Dread Nation could have easily been the inspiration for the book organiser.

I’m also not sure who designed the artwork on the letter from the author, but it is beautiful. It’s one of my favourite prints, like ever.

Gloom Mistress and Griddle Magnets

One of my favourite items from this box is the Gideon the Ninth inspired magnets. I am a simp for Gideon and Harrow. Their journey and relationship mean so much to me, and my body is ready to join the Ninth House cult. Sign me up.

Monthly Collectors Pin

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of the pin since I’ve already put it on my work bag. However, it’s still a beautiful pin. The poppy design on the cover of In the Ravenous Dark inspired the pin. I love pins and need like a thousand more of them.

Character Bookmarks

The character bookmarks aren’t officially part of the box, but they are my favourite item. Just look at how beautiful they are. They were part of the pre-order incentives for In the Ravenous Dark. If they don’t convince you to read this book, I don’t know what will.

  1. Oh my goodness what a stunning box!! I love the black and red aesthetic! I haven’t read any of the books that have been included/mentioned in this box but I’ll have to check them out 😀 Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts in this unboxing!

  2. I’ve never subscribed to any book boxes, primarily because I often feel like I won’t enjoy or have a use for the different items included in most of them. I’m not as up-to-date on new books and I don’t really collect prints or anything, BUT I do think the concept is really cool and I certainly need to be on the lookout for boxes that pique my interest because I could always just purchase them individually rather than signing up for a monthly box. This one is really, really cool! And the book sounds awesome!

  3. I haven’t heard of the book before but it and the accompanying merch look so cool! I didn’t know that illuminicrate sends book pots, that’s such a cool idea.
