Best Audiobooks to binge!

These are in no particular order, and I enjoyed all of them a lot. They aren’t necessarily my highest-rated books of the year, but they are books with exceptional narration.

Nettle & Bone by T.Kingfisher (narrated by Amara Jasper)

Nettle & Bone is a wonderfully weird and spooky book. The setting was whimsical and magical, and the writing completely sucked me in. I also very much liked the found family in this, and that the focus was on Mara’s quest and not necessarily a romance. I love how everything came together in the end. It’s truly a good fairytale, with some creepy moments as well. Overall, this was a great spooky read, and the narrator did an amazing job. They just make you feel like you’re part of the fairytale. I highly recommend this one.

I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy (narrated by the author)

This should come as no surprise. This audiobook was absolutely amazing. I watched iCarly growing up, so of course I was going to read I’m Glad My Mom Died. She narrates it herself, and it’s both amazing and terrible. Terrible because of what she went through, but her delivery and writing are amazing. You feel all her emotions, it’s worth the read even if you know nothing about her.

Belladonna by Adalyn Grace (narrated by Kristin Atherton)

It’s no secret that I absolutely adored Belladonna. Part of that reason was because of the narration. Atherton truly sucks you into the story, and her narration of Death is to die for. Their voice is like silk, it’s a must-listen. Both Belladonna and Foxglove are on my best audiobooks list, but start with Belladonna.

Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots (narrated by Alex McKenna)

Hench was one of the biggest surprises of 2022. I’ve always enjoyed a morally grey main character, especially one that turns into a villain because of the negligence of the hero. It’s probably my favourite trope. So I thought I would check out Hench, and I absolutely loved it. It’s a slower book, but the narrator really carries it. I had a blast listening to this book, it’s one of the best audiobooks and I highly recommend it.

In My Dreams I Hold a Knife by Ashley Winstead (narrated by Vanessa Johansson)

Not only is this the dark academia book of my dreams, but it was a thrilling mystery that had me guessing right until the end. Johansson does an amazing job of keeping you engaged, and providing voices to the large cast of characters. In My Dreams I Hold a Knife is a great pick for an audiobook because it keeps hold of you and never lets you go. I still think about this book, it’s definitely one of the best stories, and best audiobooks I’ve read.

Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney (narrated by Aoife McMahon)

In my opinion, the best way to read the Sally Rooney books is by listening to the audiobooks. It makes it easier to distinguish the dialogue from the rest of the text (since she doesn’t use quotation marks). Conversations with Friends really fed my millennial soul, so I highly recommend this. The narrator does an amazing job of conveying the emotions of the characters, and they did have me sobbing a few times.

Starling House by Alix E. Harrow (narrated by Natalie Naudus)

I think this audiobook is the reason I loved Starling House so much. I felt meh about Alix E. Harrow’s other books, but Starling House had me absolutely hooked. I loved the narration, I could not stop listening. If the physical book didn’t work for you, maybe consider trying the audiobook!

Murderbot Series by Martha Wells (narrated by Kevin R. Free)

It’s no secret that I love the Murderbot series, and I recently found out that it’s been dramatised. The standard versions, narrated by Kevin R. Free, are also really good. So I suggest checking out both of these versions. You won’t regret it!

The Dispatcher Series by John Scalzi (narrated by Zachary Quinto)

I’ll be honest, I love Zachary Quinto. I picked up The Dispatcher series solely because he narrates the audiobooks. Through him I fell in love with this series (and John Scalzi’s writing) and I sincerely hope we get more books in this series. This whole series is some of the best audiobooks I’ve read so far.

Mammoths at the Gate by Nghi Vo (narrated by Cindy Kay)

I love this series, but Mammoths at the Gate is my favourite one so far. I enjoyed that we got to know more about Chih’s home and their upbringing. I thought the narration was amazing, and I am so excited about the next book coming out in 2024!

And there you have it. Some of the best audiobooks to check out this year!

  1. I wholeheartedly agree with I’m Glad My Mom Died! Jennette does an excellent job. I really love listening to memoirs because they’re nearly always narrated by the author. I enjoyed listening to about 3 other memoirs in 2023 for that particular reason! Belladonna was my favorite book of the year, but I did read an ebook copy, so maybe next time I read it, I’ll listen! I’m always impressed when someone can do sultry, dark male voices well haha
