Book Series to Read in 2021

Hello friends and welcome to my Book Series to Read in 2021 post! Today I’m going to be talking about which series I want to start and which series I want to finish in 2021. I have so many book series that I need to catch up on, it’s kinda crazy. Let’s dive in!

Book series I want to finish in 2021

By my last count, I have 18 book series that are still incomplete. Incomplete means that all or most of the series is out, but I haven’t read all of the books that are out. So this does not include series like Kingdom of the Wicked, where only the first book is out and I’ve read the first book. Those series are caught up, so I will not be listing them.

Now not all of the above mentioned 18 series are a priority, that’s why I’m only going to list my priorities here.

1 – The Poppy War series by R.F Kuang

This has got to be the highest priority series on this list. I am currently reading the second book in this series (The Dragon Republic) and after I finish I want to quickly move on to the last book. This is an adult high fantasy series that follows Rin, a girl who has trained her whole life for war and now finds herself in the middle of the third Poppy War. This book draws a lot of inspiration from Chinese history and mythology and has a lot of real-world parallels to the Sino-Japanese Wars and the Chinese Civil War. It’s also a very dark story (yet surprisingly easy to read) so check the content warnings before reading. I highly recommend this series and I cannot wait to finish it.

2 – The Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire

As some of you know, I am obsessed with the Wayward Children series. Each book in this series essentially follows a different character, but all of those characters are connected through Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children. What do these children have in common? They have all travelled to fantasy worlds through doors or portals, and now they have returned (not by choice) to the “real” world.

Across the Green Grass Fields is the sixth book in this novella series and as of writing this post, I am already reading it. This series is so wonderful and features such a diverse cast of characters. Do yourself a favour and read it.

3 – The Emperium Trilogy by Claire Legrand

I have been trying to read the second book in this trilogy for months now, and I’m just not getting to it. I have a physical review copy and an eARC of the third book that I desperately want to read, but I have to read the second book first. I’m hoping that by putting Kingsbane (and subsequently Lightbringer) on this list it’ll keep me accountable. Here’s the synopsis for the first book in the series, Furyborn:

When assassins ambush her best friend, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing herself as one of a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light, and a queen of blood. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven elemental magic trials. If she fails, she will be executed…unless the trials kill her first.

One thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a fairy tale to Eliana Ferracora. A bounty hunter for the Undying Empire, Eliana believes herself untouchable–until her mother vanishes. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain and discovers that the evil at the empire’s heart is more terrible than she ever imagined.

As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world–and of each other.

4 – The Stalking Jack the Ripper series by Kerri Maniscalco

It’s been almost two years since I read the third book in this series, and the fourth has just been sitting on my shelves. I’ve been putting this series off because I don’t want it to end, but it is definitely time. Check out the synopsis for the last book in the series, Capturing the Devil:

Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell have landed in America, a bold, brash land unlike the genteel streets of London they knew. But like London, the city of Chicago hides its dark secrets well. When the two attend the spectacular World’s Fair, they find the once-in-a-lifetime event tainted with reports of missing people and unsolved murders.

Determined to help, Audrey Rose and Thomas begin their investigations, only to find themselves facing a serial killer unlike any they’ve heard of before. Identifying him is one thing, but capturing him—and getting dangerously lost in the infamous Murder Hotel he constructed as a terrifying torture device—is another.

Will Audrey Rose and Thomas see their last mystery to the end—together and in love—or will their fortunes finally run out when their most depraved adversary makes one final, devastating kill?

Series I want to start in 2021

I’m not aiming to start many series in 2021, I want to focus more on finishing series. However, there are a few I am eager to read, so here they are.

1 – The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb

I have seen so many people talk about this series and read this series and love it. I’m trying to get into more adult fantasy series, and I think this is the perfect place to start. The first book, Assassin’s Apprentice, follows Fitz, a bastard royal whose father is the crown prince. After he is left at the doorstep of the royal castle, his father abdicates the throne in shame and no one really knows what to do with Fitz. The king sees an opportunity in this and raises Fitz to become his royal assassin.

That’s basically all I know about this series, and I am on board. This is definitely the perfect book series to read in 2021.

2 – Witches Steeped in Gold by Ciannon Smart

This book is one of my most anticipated books of 2021 and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. Seriously, if the cover isn’t enough, here’s the synopsis:

Divided by their castes. United by their vengeance.

Iraya has spent her life in a cell, but every day brings her closer to freedom—and vengeance.

Jazmyne is the queen’s daughter, but unlike her sister before her, she has no intention of dying to strengthen her mother’s power.

Sworn enemies, these two witches enter a precarious alliance to take down a mutual threat. But revenge is a bloody pursuit, and nothing is certain—except the lengths they will go to win this game.

Deadly, fierce, magnetically addictive: this Jamaican-inspired fantasy debut is a thrilling journey where dangerous magic reigns supreme and betrayal lurks beneath every word.

3 – The Brown Sisters by Talia Hibbert

I started reading more romance novels in 2020 and it is something I want to continue doing in 2021. A series I am really looking forward to is the Get A Life, Chloe Brown series. Here’s the synopsis:

Chloe Brown is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almost—but not quite—dying, she’s come up with seven directives to help her “Get a Life”, and she’s already completed the first: finally moving out of her glamorous family’s mansion.

But it’s not easy being bad, even when you’ve written step-by-step guidelines on how to do it correctly. What Chloe needs is a teacher, and she knows just the man for the job.

Redford ‘Red’ Morgan is a handyman with tattoos, a motorcycle, and more sex appeal than ten-thousand Hollywood heartthrobs. He’s also an artist who paints at night and hides his work in the light of day, which Chloe knows because she spies on him occasionally. Just the teeniest, tiniest bit.

But when she enlists Red in her mission to rebel, she learns things about him that no spy session could teach her. Like why he clearly resents Chloe’s wealthy background. And why he never shows his art to anyone. And what really lies beneath his rough exterior…

Yay for more romance book series to read in 2021!
