First Chapter Challenge: Introduction

Hey, there book dragons! I hope you’re all doing good. This week on my blog I have something exciting planned. I’m doing the First Chapter Challenge, inspired by my lovely friend Mieke over at Mouse That Reads (check out her original post here).

The challenge works like this: You select a couple of books from your TBR, put two books against each other, read the first chapters and then decided which one you like best. This continues on until you’re left with only one book standing.

I’ve selected 10 books from my TBR that have been on there forever. I’ll be picking two books at a time to read the first chapter of, then select the winner. The winner of this entire challenge will be placed on my May TBR.

Without any further ado, here are the books I’ll be reading!

1. We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia

First Chapter ChallengeGoodreads synopsis: At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband’s household or raise his children, but both are promised a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class. Daniela Vargas is the school’s top student, but her bright future depends upon no one discovering her darkest secret—that her pedigree is a lie. Her parents sacrificed everything to obtain forged identification papers so Dani could rise above her station. Now that her marriage to an important politico’s son is fast approaching, she must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society, where famine and poverty rule supreme.

On her graduation night, Dani seems to be in the clear, despite the surprises that unfold. But nothing prepares her for all the difficult choices she must make. Especially when she is asked to spy for a resistance group desperately fighting to bring equality to Medio.

2. Havenfall by Sarah Holland

HavenfallGoodreads synopsis: Hidden deep in the mountains of Colorado lies the Inn at Havenfall, a sanctuary that connects ancient worlds — each with their own magic — together. For generations, the inn has protected all who seek refuge within its walls, and any who disrupt the peace can never return.

For Maddie Morrow, summers at the inn are more than a chance to experience this magic first-hand. Havenfall is an escape from reality, where her mother sits on death row accused of murdering Maddie’s brother. It’s where Maddie fell in love with handsome Fiorden soldier Brekken. And it’s where one day she hopes to inherit the role of Innkeeper from her beloved uncle.

But this summer, the impossible happens–a dead body is found, shattering everything the inn stands for. With Brekken missing, her uncle gravely injured, and a dangerous creature on the loose, Maddie suddenly finds herself responsible for the safety of everyone in Havenfall. She’ll do anything to uncover the truth. As dark secrets are revealed about the inn itself, one thing becomes clear to Maddie–no one can be trusted, and no one is safe…

3. Into the Crooked Place by Alexandra Christo

Karam, an underground fighter with a penchant for killing first and forgetting to ask questions

And Saxony, a Crafter in hiding who will stop at nothing to avenge her family

4. The Smoke Thieves by Sally Green

In Brigant, Princess Catherine prepares for a loveless political marriage arranged by her brutal and ambitious father. And in Calidor, downtrodden servant March seeks revenge on the prince who betrayed his people. In Pitoria, feckless Edyon steals cheap baubles for cheaper thrills as he drifts from town to town. And in the barren northern territories, thirteen-year-old Tash is running for her life as she plays bait for the gruff demon hunter Gravell.

As alliances shift and shatter, and old certainties are overturned, our four heroes find their past lives transformed and their futures inextricably linked by the unpredictable tides of magic and war. Who will rise and who will fall? And who will claim the ultimate prize?

5. The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

The bookish lifeGoodreads synopsis: The only child of a single mother, Nina has her life just as she wants it: a job in a bookstore, a kick-butt trivia team, a world-class planner and a cat named Phil. If she sometimes suspects there might be more to life than reading, she just shrugs and picks up a new book.

When the father Nina never knew existed suddenly dies, leaving behind innumerable sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews, Nina is horrified. They all live close by! She’ll have to Speak. To. Strangers. It’s a disaster! And as if that wasn’t enough, Tom, her trivia nemesis, has turned out to be cute, funny, and deeply interested in getting to know her. Doesn’t he realize what a terrible idea that is?

It’s time for Nina to come out of her comfortable shell. But she isn’t convinced real life could ever live up to fiction. It’s going to take a brand-new family, a persistent suitor, and the combined effects of ice cream and trivia to make her turn her own fresh page.

7. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

an emberGoodreads synopsis: Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Laia and her family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling.  He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined. And that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

8. The Poppy War by R.F Kuang

poppy warGoodreads synopsis: When Rin aced the Keju—the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies—it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise. That she got into Sinegard—the most elite military school in Nikan—was even more surprising.

But surprises aren’t always good.

Because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard. Targeted from the outset by rival classmates for her colour, poverty, and gender, Rin discovers she possesses a lethal, unearthly power—an aptitude for the nearly-mythical art of shamanism.

For while the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. The militarily advanced Federation occupied Nikan for decades after the First Poppy War, and only barely lost the continent in the Second. And while most of the people are complacent to go about their lives, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away . . .

9. The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

Shahrzad is the first volunteer to become Khalid’s bride. She vows to stop his reign of terror—for the friend she lost, and all those who perished before her.

Incredibly, Shahrzad manages to survive her first morning…then the next.

Night after night, she mesmerizes the Caliph with her storytelling. Buying time and digging deeper into the elusive boy-king’s past.

If Khalid is truly the murderous madman everyone says he is, how does Shahrzad find it so easy to fall for him?

10. The Shadow Queen by C.J Redwine

shadow queenGoodreads synopsis: Lorelai Diederich, crown princess and fugitive at large, has one mission: kill the wicked queen who took both the Ravenspire throne and the life of her father.
