Goodreads Description: As a conductor on the Underground Railroad, Hetty Rhodes helped usher dozens of people north with her wits and magic. Now that the Civil War is over, Hetty and her husband Benjy have settled in Philadelphia, solving murders and mysteries that the white authorities won’t touch. When they find one of their friends slain in an alley, Hetty and Benjy bury the body and set off to find answers. But the secrets and intricate lies of the elites of Black Philadelphia only serve to dredge up more questions. To solve this mystery, they will have to face ugly truths all around them, including the ones about each other.

In this vibrant and original novel, Nicole Glover joins a roster of contemporary writers within fantasy, such as Victor LaValle and Zen Cho, who use speculative fiction to delve into important historical and cultural threads.

The Conductors Review

Characters – 8/10

I was invested in Hetty and Benji. I shipped them and their friendship/relationship super hard. Hetty really grows as a character throughout this book and I loved her development. She learns how to accept her new family and friends and works through her grief.

The one problem I had with this book was the secondary characters. There were so many I had trouble keeping up with them. Toward the end, we get a more central cast of secondary characters and I hope we learn more about them in the sequel.

Atmosphere – 8/10

I don’t know much about US history, but I loved the setting. The characters navigate a post-civil war society, full of racial discrimination and tension. However, the story carries a note of hope as we follow the characters trying to rebuild their lives and striving for more.

The narrator of the audiobook did a really good job. I loved listening to her voice.

Writing – 8/10

The writing was solid. I was really invested in the book and I kinda wish I had a physical copy to highlight some good quotes.

Plot – 7/10

The plot was a little slow at first. It often meanders away from the excitement. We get a lot of flashbacks, but I was not mad about it. The flashbacks gave us some important character information and I thought it rounded out the story very well. The murder mystery is intriguing, but some more set up would have been nice.

Intrigue – 7/10

I would have liked more set up for the main conflict. I may have missed a flashback scene somewhere, but I needed some more information.

Logic – 7/10

The magic system in this book is one of my favourites. It took some time to get the hang of it and we don’t get a lot of explanation. But once I understood it I really enjoyed it.

Enjoyment – 9/10

I was really invested in this story and I would highly recommend it for lovers of historical fiction with fantasy elements.
