Goodreads Description: Delaney Meyers-Petrov is tired of being seen as fragile just because she’s Deaf. So when she’s accepted into a prestigious program at Godbole University that trains students to slip between parallel worlds, she’s excited for the chance to prove herself. But her semester gets off to a rocky start as she faces professors who won’t accommodate her disability, and a pretentious upperclassman fascinated by Delaney’s unusual talents.

Colton Price died when he was nine years old. Quite impossibly, he woke several weeks later at the feet of a green-eyed little girl. Now, twelve years later, Delaney Meyers-Petrov has stumbled back into his orbit, but Colton’s been ordered to keep far away from the new girl… and the voices she hears calling to her from the shadows.

Delaney wants to keep her distance from Colton — she seems to be the only person on campus who finds him more arrogant than charming — yet after a Godbole student turns up dead, she and Colton are forced to form a tenuous alliance, plummeting down a rabbit-hole of deeply buried university secrets. But Delaney and Colton discover the cost of opening the doors between worlds when they find themselves up against something old and nameless, an enemy they need to destroy before it tears them — and their forbidden partnership — apart.

The Whispering Dark Review

How do I even begin to write this review? My thoughts are an incoherent mess. This book was a masterpiece. It was written so well, I cannot believe that this is a debut. I wanted to highlight every single paragraph because it was just so beautiful. Every single word landed like a punch and I am a masochist. It was dark, creepy, and atmospheric and I loved every minute of it.

This book is truly Ninth House meets The Raven Boys, and it might even be what I wanted Ninth House to be. Colton and Darlington are forever going to be my favourites. And Lane is such an amazing character. Her character arc was amazing, going from something fragile to something strong and otherworldly. Colton is the definition of broody morally grey hero and I lived for every moment. Both of their characters were so real and fleshed out. I hung on their every word and I was fully invested in them and their story.

My one complaint would be that I wanted some more lore and academia-type studies. It’s glossed over for the most part, but I did enjoy the pieces we got. This book is definitely a Hades and Persephone retelling in disguise. I honestly don’t have the words to describe my love for this book. I was near tears at the end.

It is expertly crafted, a twisty thriller with truly creepy scenes, and a story that keeps you hooked until the last page. Read it immediately.

  1. Any book that has tiny skulls hidden in flowers on the cover is going to pique my interest, haha. I’ve never read (or really wanted to read) Ninth House or The Raven Boys, but your enthusiasm for this book makes me want to check it out!
