These Books Will Self Destruct in 12 Months

Hello friends! I hope you had a good Christmas or a good break. Today I am bringing you These Books Will Self Destruct in 12 Months! What does that mean? you ask. I’ll tell you. I’m going to list 5 books that I need to read before the end of 2021. If I do not read those books, I need to get rid of them. I saw this type of post on Becca and the Books’ Youtube channel, so you can go check out the original video there!

The books I’ve chosen are mainly neglected books on my physical TBR. I will not be including eARCs or eBooks here. I need to start working on my physical TBR, and my backlist books. So this is the perfect list to motivate me to actually read some backlist books. Let’s get into it!

Tempest and Slaughter by Tamora Pierce

These Books Will Self DestructEvery time I think I’m going to get rid of this book, but then I read the synopsis and I want to read it again. I actually received this book from Jonathan Ball Publishers in 2018, so I really have to get to it. Soon. And if I don’t, I need to get rid of it.

Goodreads Synopsis: Arram Draper is a boy on the path to becoming one of the realm’s most powerful mages. The youngest student in his class at the Imperial University of Carthak, he has a Gift with unlimited potential for greatness–and for attracting danger. At his side are his two best friends: Varice, a clever girl with an often-overlooked talent, and Ozorne, the “leftover prince” with secret ambitions. Together, these three friends forge a bond that will one-day shape kingdoms. And as Ozorne gets closer to the throne and Varice gets closer to Arram’s heart, Arram begins to realize that one day soon he will have to decide where his loyalties truly lie.

In the Numair Chronicles, readers will be rewarded with the never-before-told story of how Numair Salmalín came to Tortall. Newcomers will discover an unforgettable fantasy adventure where a kingdom’s future rests on the shoulders of a talented young man with a knack for making vicious enemies.

The Wren Hunt by Mary Watson

I received this book in a giveaway I think in 2018, and it has just been on my TBR since forever. I’m not particularly interested in reading it, but some friends have told me it’s a good book. I also believe it is a standalone, with the second book in the series following a different set of characters. Which is great since I don’t want to start too many series in 2021.

Goodreads Synopsis: Every year on St Stephen’s Day, Wren Silke is chased through the forest in a warped version of a childhood game. Her pursuers are judges – a group of powerful and frightening boys who know nothing of her true identity. If they knew she was an augur – their sworn enemy – the game would be up.

This year, the tension between judges and augurs is at breaking point. Wren’s survival, and that of her family, depends on her becoming a spy in the midst of these boys she fears most and using her talent, her magic, to steal from them the only thing that can restore her family’s former power for good. But Wren’s talent comes with a price. The more she uses it, the more she loses her grip on reality and soon she’s questioning everything she’s ever known about her family, about augurs and judges, and about the dangerous tattooed stranger who most definitely is not on her side …

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

These Books Will Self DestructYes, you read that right. I have not read the Lunar Chronicles. This series came out while I was not an active reader, so I missed out on it. However I keep seeing it everywhere on bookstagram, and many people have told me how much they love it. So I want to give it a shot. I got the first book from a friend, so here’s hoping I get to read it in 2021.

Goodreads Synopsis: Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless Lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. . . . Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg.

She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the centre of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

For the longest time, I thought this book was called Carnaval. I swear the Mandela effect got me. But anyway, this book has also been sitting on my TBR for the longest time, along with Legendary. I’ve also never had a particular need to pick it up, but I got the books from a friend who loves them, so here we are. If I don’t read them by the end of the year, I will get rid of them.

Goodreads Synopsis: Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless, she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic.

The Fandom by Anna Day

These Books Will Self DestructI picked this book up at a sale in 2018 because it sounded very much like one of the Night World Books (and I loved those books) and now it’s just been sitting on my shelves. This is probably the book I want to read the most, so I’m hoping to get to it.

Goodreads Description: Violet’s in her element. Cosplay at the ready, she can’t wait to feel part of her favourite fandom: The Gallows Dance, a mega book and movie franchise that she and her friends know EVERY WORD of (canon and fanfic included).

But at Comic-Con, a freak accident transports Violet and her friends into the story for real. And in just the first five minutes, they cause the death of the heroine and get taken prisoner by the rebel group she was supposed to lead to victory.

It’s up to Violet to take her place and play out the plot the way it was written. But stories have a life of their own, and when you change the script in one place, the rest gets revised too…

  1. This is such a good idea! But I would be terrible at it, I have books on my shelf that have been there for multiple years and probably will stay unread for another few…but I just know that one day I’ll read them and be glad I kept them! 🙈😂

  2. Those are some awesome books to have ahead of you this coming year! Great idea and great blog post.
