Unpopular Opinions: YA Edition

Unpop 1

Honesty is the best policy, especially when it comes to books. If I’m going to invest my (limited) time in something I want to enjoy it. Over the years I’ve gathered several unpopular opinions, especially about YA books, so here they are. Don’t @ me.

Unpopular Opinions:

I’m not a fan of Sarah J. Maas.

9781408887967Yep, I’m starting with the one that’s most likely to get me stoned. I’ve been on bookstagram for a month now, and the majority of posts I’ve seen there are of the SJM books. From what I’ve heard, her storylines are recycled, her books lack diversity and her characters are very cookie cutter. I will admit I haven’t read the books, but there’s like 20 of them and I’m not sure I want to.

J.K. Rowling is queen no more.

I know what you’re going to say; “how dare she?” Don’t get me wrong, I love Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts, and JKR can write. I’m just not a fan of her as a person anymore. The Cursed Child was a nightmare, she wanted to kill Ron, she’s gone back on the Hermione/Ron pairing and don’t even get me started on Albus Dumbledore. She’s gone back on his sexuality as well, and it’s been stated that Dumbledore won’t be explicitly gay in the new Fantastic Beasts movie. There’s also her support of Johnny Depp and the complete miscast of him in Fantastic Beasts. I’m definitely not a fan anymore.

Sometimes the TV series is better.

outlander 1b clairejamieHere’s a good one, if you don’t already hate me because of the first two. Sometimes the series/movie is better than the book. Here I’m referring to Outlander, who does the books justice (so far) and Divergent. The book was slow, but the pacing of the Divergent movie was better. It’s possible to love the show/movie better than the books, and that’s okay.

I hate the Shadowhunters.

Okay, maybe I’m stretching the truth a bit. I have said in a previous post that I love City of Bones. It’s even on my list for Top Ten Best Books, but here’s the thing: I don’t like the rest of the series. I hate the TV show, the movie was gross and the infernal thingys was just unnecessary. Clare’s writing is messy and although she doesn’t shy away from LGBTQ+ relationships, there’s not much else diversity-wise.

I don’t like John Green books.

220px John Green Turtles All The Way Down Book Cover 1I have never read one of his books, and I never will. Miss me with that feelings stuff. That is all.

The enemies-to-lovers trope

I’ve seen this trope get a lot of hate, but personally, I love it. There’s nothing better than seeing two people who hate each other fall in love with each other. Inan and Zelié are two of my favourite characters at the moment. You can’t hate someone if you don’t love them a little bit. It just makes sense.

There you have it, folks. See any opinions you agree or disagree with?
