2021 Pride Month Book Recommendations

Hi, there friends! Welcome to my 2021 Pride Month Book Recommendations post! I will admit that I’m feeling a little salty this pride month. The ace and bi-phobia in the community and from outside have really been getting to me. The “Americanisation” of Pride Month is also getting to me. We celebrate Pride in October here in SA, but it’s always so hushed. Also, this your friendly reminder to read LGBTQ books all year, not just during Pride months.

In all, I guess I’m just feeling a bit down. Hopefully, these amazing books will help cheer us all up. Let’s dive in!

1. What We Devour by Linsey Miller

I’m an easy person. Mention the book has a-spec rep and I am already hitting preorder. What We Devour is a dark fantasy about a girl, wicked gods, and a doorway keeping monstrous things at bay. Sign me right up for this one.

2. The Unbroken by C.L Clark

I was absolutely blown away by The Unbroken. It’s a really hard-hitting book that deals with colonialism and being caught between two opposing worlds. The Unbroken follows Touraine, a soldier for the Empire who stole her from her homeland as a child. When she returns to her homeland, she must choose between the Empire, her people, and her friends. This book also features a f/f romance and a world where queerness is normal.

Look out for my review coming this Friday!

3. Fireheart Tiger by Aliette de Bodard

This book has been on my radar for a while now. I will confess to not knowing much about it, but I heard it was queer and it’s a novella. I do like a short book. The book is pitched as “The Goblin Emperor meets Howl’s Moving Castle in a pre-colonial Vietnamese-esque world” and I am here for it.

4. The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson

We read this book for The Read Better Book Club in March and I just cannot stop thinking about it. The Space Between Worlds follows Cara, who travels between different parallel universes for a massive corporation. There’s a f/f romance, a Mad Max-inspired world, and tons of conspiracies. If you want to read more science fiction, I highly recommend this. It was easy to follow and the science was explained really well.

5. Perfect on Paper by Sophie Gonzales

This book is our book club pick for June and I couldn’t be happier. Sophie Gonzales is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. Perfect on Paper follows Darcy, a high school junior who runs an “agony aunt” service from an abandoned locker. Enter Brougham, the resident jock, who catches her in the act and blackmails her to help him get his ex-girlfriend back.

This book is hilarious, heartwarming, and tackles a lot of discussions surrounding bi-phobia. You don’t want to miss out on this one.

6. The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski

I haven’t read this book yet, but I believe it’s criminally underrated since I never see it on bookstagram. Set in the world of the New York Times–bestselling Winner’s Trilogy, Rutkoski returns with an epic LGBTQ romantic fantasy about learning to free ourselves from the lies others tell us—and the lies we tell ourselves. I’m not usually a fan of fantasy romance, but this one has me hooked for sure.
