May Reading Wrap-Up!

Can you believe we’re in June already? It’s a bit late, but welcome to my May reading wrap-up! May was a busy month for me, and I didn’t read as much as I wanted to. I started a new job, and I’m also planning on starting a small bookish map business. Stay tuned for the details on that, and follow me on Instagram for more updates! For now, let’s take a look at what I read.

May Reading Wrap-Up: Books I Read in May

As I said, May was a pretty slow month. I only managed to read three books, and only two of them were worth it. Here’s my May reading wrap-up:

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston

A time travel romance set on the New York subway? I will admit I wasn’t very into it at first. But as I read further I fell in love with the characters and the setting. If you want to laugh and cry in one book, this one is for you. One Last Stop is a true celebration of queerness, found family, and friendship.

The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker by Lauren James

The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker follows Harriet after she dies in a freak accident. She becomes a ghost, trapped to haunt the place she died in. Only there are other ghosts, each with their own special power. Harriet is only interested in unleashing her own power, even if it could endanger everyone around her. This was our Read Better Book Club pick for May and I have to say, I hated this book.

The premise sounded amazing. Ghosts with special powers? Sign me up. Only it was not well executed at all. This makes me really sad, since I read The Quiet at the End of the World by Lauren James and really loved it. Unfortunately, Harriet Stoker was a miss.

The Unbroken by C.L. Clark

This book was one hell of a ride. The Unbroken follows Touraine, a soldier stolen from her homeland to fight for the colonizers. When she returns to her homeland, she becomes embroiled with a princess, revolution, and the fate of nations. This book was really good, and it really made me think long and hard about colonization and its effects. Plus there’s a f/f romance involved.

Watch out for my review coming next week!

May Reading Wrap-Up

I’d say it was a good month overall. Hopefully, June will be even better!

May Hauls

Man, I got a lot of books in May. To be fair it was also my birthday, but still. I am clearly out of control.

May ARCs

I was a bit better at requesting ARCs in May. I’m making slow but steady progress through my Netgalley ARCs, hopefully, I’ll finish them all before the end of the year.

  1. You read some really good books! I bought Sweethand too last month and iā€™m looking forward to it. hope you have a good June!

    1. I was really surprised to find Sweethand in a bookstore. South African stores are so behind lol.

  2. I haven’t done a wrap-up in the longest time and requesting books on NetGalley is definitely out of the question for me until I raise my ratio šŸ™‚ Looks like you had a great month, though, and happy belated birthday!!

  3. I’ve got the audio of One Last Stop that I’m hoping to start soon! It looks like May was a pretty good reading month for you!

  4. You’ve got some really great books here, although sorry to hear that not all of them worked for you. These are actually all new to me, and I really like the sound of One Last Stop. Thanks for the recommendations.

  5. I genuinely laughed aloud when I read your synopsis of Harriet Stoker and then how you ended it with “I hated this book.” I was 100% expecting you to rave about it and then you just didn’t and it cracked me up for some reason. I loved reading through this post! It’s awesome to see what you read and purchased in May. I hope you enjoy Six Crimson Cranes when you get to it. That was my favorite book of May. I didn’t think anything could surpass Spin the Dawn for me, but this did so with flying colors!
