5 Underrated Sci-Fi Books

Blue Haven

Thrillers and sci-fi have always been two genres that go together really well for me. Blue Haven is no exception. In this book, we follow Aloe as she’s invited to stay in an exclusive tropical paradise. However, paradise is not all that it seems to be, and it’s definitely hiding something.

I love it when things are not what they seem, and King has a knack for building excellent tension. The story is imaginative and it will keep you guessing until the very last moment.

Sisters of the Vast Black by Lina Rather

I recently finished the audiobook and the more I think about it, the more I like this book. There is just something about a novella that can accomplish amazing world and character building in under 200 pages that gets me every time. Sisters of the Vast Black follows a group of nuns in the outer sectors of space. They are caught up in political turmoil, and some shocking secrets are revealed.

I will admit that I was a little bored in the first half, but the second half absolutely blew me away. This book is 100% worth the read (if the nuns in space part wasn’t enough to convince you).

Finna by Nino Cipri

If you like Doctor Who then I have the book for you. When an elderly customer at a big box furniture (not Ikea) store slips through a portal to another dimension, it’s up to two minimum-wage employees to track her across the multiverse and protect their company’s bottom line.

If that isn’t enough to convince you, I don’t know what is. You just have to read this book.

A Spark of White Fire by Sangu Mandanna

This is probably the most criminally underrated book on this list. A Spark of White Fire is one of my favourite sci-fi books of all time and it deserves to get more hype.

In a universe of capricious gods, dark moons, and kingdoms built on the backs of spaceships, a cursed queen sends her infant daughter away, a jealous uncle steals the throne of Kali from his nephew, and an exiled prince vows to take his crown back.

The family dynamics in this book is SO GOOD, the worldbuilding is SO GOOD, everything is just SO GOOD. Please read it.

Ignite the Stars by Maura Milan

Space outlaws, space races, and a twist ending that will make you cry, Ignite the Stars by Maura Milan is the adventure book you didn’t know you needed. If you want a slow burn romance with a found family story, definitely check this out.
