Back to School Book Recs
Hi friends! Can you believe this week is almost over? Schools have started back up here in SA (our school year is from Feb – Nov) so I decided to do some Back to School Book Recs! I love books with school settings, so I thought I’d make a list. It includes some of my favourites, and some books coming out later this year! Let’s dive in!

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus
The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walks out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.
This book was such a delight to read. A murder mystery in a high school setting is right up my alley.
Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson
A 100-year-old cold case combined with a prestigious boarding school and a fresh murder? You’ve got yourself a mystery! Truly Devious follows Stevie Bell as she tries to solve a cold case at Ellingham Academy. There are spooky secret passageways, infuriating boys and beautiful friendships. This is a must-read.
Crave by Tracy Wolff
The “paranormal boarding school” trope is one of my favourite tropes tbh. This book is Vampire Academy meets Twilight, and I loved every minute of it. It’s trope-y and the characters are nothing special. But the writing is great and sometimes you just need a good vampire romance.
Perfect on Paper by Sophie Gonzales
This book comes out later this month and it was just such a fun read. This book follows Darcy, a bisexual girl who runs an agony aunt service out of a school locker. When the resident jock asks for her advice, she’s pulled into romance shenanigans that could endanger her own relationships. This book tackles biphobia in a brilliant way, and it really hit hard. Check out my review coming on the 9th of March!
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
Legendborn is a brilliant debut novel that follows Brie to an early college program after the death of her mother. While dealing with her grief, she discovers an Arthurian secret society that pulls her in. She must learn to control her magic while trying to uncover the truth about her mother’s death. This book deals with grief in such a beautiful way. I cannot recommend it enough.
Tweet Cute by Emma Lord
Pepper and Jack are from two completely different worlds. Pepper’s family owns a big chain of fast-food restaurants, and Jack’s family owns a small Brooklyn cafe. Their Twitter spat accidentally goes viral, and they start to fall for each other in real life. Think You’ve Got Mail meets Twitter. This book is funny, heartwarming, and one of my favourite reads.

The next few books are all new releases that I haven’t read yet, or still to be released!
Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
Welcome to Niveus Private Academy, where money paves the hallways, and the students are never less than perfect. Until now. Because anonymous texter, Aces, is bringing two students’ dark secrets to light. Talented musician Devon buries himself in rehearsals, but he can’t escape the spotlight when his private photos go public. Head girl Chiamaka isn’t afraid to get what she wants, but soon everyone will know the price she has paid for power. Someone is out to get them both. Someone who holds all the aces. And they’re planning much more than a high-school game…
This just sounds so amazing! I cannot wait to read it.
How We Fall Apart by Katie Zhao
In a YA thriller that is Crazy Rich Asians meets One of Us is Lying, students at an elite prep school are forced to confront their secrets when their ex-best friend turns up dead.
I am a sucker for Dark Academia. This book sounds like one hell of a ride. Elite prep schools, pressures to do well, and a murder mystery. Yes, please.
It Ends in Fire by Andrew Shvarts
I have been following the author on Twitter since he pitched his book, and boy am I excited for this one.
ALKA CHELRAZI IS ON A MISSION:
1. Infiltrate Blackwater Academy
2. Win the Great Game
3. Burn Wizard society to the ground
A magic school, a deadly game and wizards bent on revenge? Sign me right up.
Plain Bad Heroines by Emily Danforth
I don’t fully know what this book is about, I just know I need it. From Goodreads, I could gather that there’s a haunted boarding school, a horror movie, and sapphics(?). Do you need to know more?
There you go! Some Back to School Book Recs for when you’re in a school-trope mood! Happy reading!
These are some awesome sounding recommendations – This would take care of my next couple of months of reading!
I’m too cool for school, as well as being too old 😉 So now I can fill my days with fiction instead of facts. Neener Neener NEENER!
Great list. I’ve not read any of them but they sound interesting.
I have been wanting to read, One of Us is Lying. Great list of books.
So many of these are on my TBR! Excellent list.
I have so many of these on my tbr , great post .
This is the list I didn’t know I needed! Even though I’ve been trying to find some more YA mysteries where the main characters aren’t in high school anymore, so many of these books sound incredible! I’ve already preordered both Ace of Spades and How We Fall Apart and I can’t wait to get my hands on them!
Thanks for the recommendations.
i enjoyed tweet cute;; and how we fall apart sounds like one i will definitely enjoy
