First Chapter Challenge Round 1

First Chapter Challenge Round 1

First Chapter Challenge Round 1

Hello friends! I hope you’re all doing well. This week I’m doing the First Chapter Challenge Round 1! I was supposed to post this last week, but unfortunately we didn’t have electricity for a few days, so I was unable to anything.

If you want to know more about what the first chapter challenge is and how it works, check out my introduction post here.

First Chapter ChallengeThe Wrath and The Dawn vs The Shadow Queen

Winner: The Wrath and the Dawn

I have to admit, I’m a bit tired of Snow White retellings. The first chapter of The Shadow Queen just did not interest me. The cliffhanger at the end of the first chapter of The Wrath and the Dawn was excellent and I am dying to know more. I’ve just finished reading Girls Made of Snow and Glass, so maybe that’s why I wasn’t in the mood for a Snow White retelling. However, I really enjoyed the first chapter of The Wrath and the Dawn and I can’t wait to read more.

First Chapter ChallengeAn Ember in the Ashes vs The Poppy War

Winner: An Ember in the Ashes

I had trouble deciding between these two books. Both of their first chapters immediately throw you into the action, but in the end, An Ember in the Ashes won. Once again the cliffhanger left me wanting more. The Poppy War is also a high fantasy book, with a lot of information being thrown at us in the first chapter. I’m a big mood reader, and I was more in the mood for An Ember in the Ashes.

First Chapter ChallengeThe Bookish Life of Nina Hill vs Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Winner: The Bookish Life of Nina Hill

This one won hands down. The first chapter of Ari and Dante is filled with teenage angst. I have no problems reading teenage angst, but Nina Hill is dealing with adult angst. And unfortunately, I am an adult, so I’d rather read about adult angst for now. Also, Nina Hill is really funny, and I could use a fun read right about now.

First Chapter ChallengeWe Set the Dark on Fire vs Havenfall

Winner: We Set the Dark on Fire

It was extremely difficult to choose between these two. Havenfall has such a unique premise and the worldbuilding jumped out at me from the first page. We Set the Dark on Fire is just as unique, and the cliffhanger at the end of the first chapter had me wanting more. I’m definitely going to read Havenfall at some point, but We Set the Dark on Fire takes this round.

First Chapter ChallengeThe Smoke Thieves vs Into the Crooked Place

Winner: The Smoke Thieves

I’m going to be honest and say I wasn’t really interested in either of these books. The first chapter of Into the Crooked Place was super confusing and the writing felt really disjointed. The first chapter of The Smoke Thieves was slightly better, but the number of characters in the book turns me off. The Smoke Thieves won only because it was the most readable of the two.

That’s it for round one! Which book do you think will win?

I also want to take a moment to ask everyone reading this post to please go to the following page to support #Blacklivesmatter. We need to do better. Please show your support in any way you can.
