Goodreads DescriptionKappa Rho Nu isn’t your average sorority. Their parties are notorious. Their fundraisers are known for being Westerly College’s most elaborate affairs. But beneath the veil of Greek life and prestige, the sisters of Kappu Rho Nu share a secret: they’re a coven of witches. For Vivi Deveraux, being one of Kappa Rho Nu’s Ravens means getting a chance to redefine herself. For Scarlett Winters, a bonafide Raven and daughter of a legacy Raven, pledge this year means living up to her mother’s impossible expectations of becoming Kappa Rho Nu’s next president. Scarlett knows she’d be the perfect candidate — that is, if she didn’t have one human-sized skeleton in her closet…. When Vivi and Scarlett are paired as big and little for initiation, they find themselves sinking into the sinister world of blood oaths and betrayals.

The Ravens Book Review

Characters – 6/10

The Ravens follow two perspectives, Scarlet, a junior at university, and Vivi, a freshman. Scarlet really annoyed me in the beginning. She preached “sisterhood” but continued to treat other girls (especially Vivi) like trash. She does go through some character development at the end of the book and I liked her a lot more after that. Vivi wasn’t a bad character. I really enjoyed her perspective.

I didn’t like any of the relationships in this book. Everyone falls in and out of love so quickly that it didn’t feel realistic for me. The side characters could have also used some work, they were mostly interchangeable to me.

Atmosphere – 8/10

A spooky witchy story set at a university sorority? Sign me up. It reminded me so much of my own university experience, so nostalgia does play a role. But I just really enjoyed this setting. I listened to the audiobook of this one and some scenes really creeped me out. The narrator did an amazing job of scaring me. Overall the atmosphere is just really well done.

Writing – 7/10

I can’t complain about the writing. It was really solid and I felt like Scarlet and Vivi had distinct voices. I wish there was some more character and relationship building, but hopefully, we get that in the sequel.

Plot – 7/10

This was a fun story. It’s nothing too serious, but not all stories have to be serious. The Ravens was creepy and fun and it made me long for university life. (Minus the creepy stuff). I enjoyed the plot twist and the end of the book. It was set up really well and paid off well.

Intrigue – 6/10

As I mentioned before, the way Scarlet treats Vivi and other girls was just not it. It wasn’t a believable conflict to me and just annoyed me. I could understand the behaviour if she was maybe 16, but she’s at least 21. It just seemed so petty and childish. I do wish this book leaned more into the NA setting. It could have been the perfect crossover book, but more on NA in a later post.

Logic – 8/10

The magic system was not bad. It’s well developed and makes sense in the story. We could have delved into Vivi’s powers a bit, but maybe that will be more developed in the sequel.

Enjoyment – 8/10

Overall I really enjoyed this book. I like the setting, I enjoyed the sorority life and the nostalgia. If you’re looking for a fun read with some creepy elements, give this book a go.

  1. I have been looking forward to this review since you mentioned this book in your wrap up. Great review!! This sounds a bit like a witchy DA book. Adding this to my tbr

  2. This sounds good but the annoying character would probably ruin the entire book for me because characters matter a lot to me haha. The sorority life sounds good though. Lovely review!

  3. The annoying characters sounds like something I should keep in mind while reading so I won’t be annoyed and give up, especially considering the character development they’ll have. Glad to hear about the spooky, atmospheric setting of the book!

  4. I totally get the character dislike lol. Hate when that happens. But thanks for the review! I think I’ll definitely be giving this one a try since I’m in the mood for witchy and spooky vibes.
