Books on my A-Spec TBR

Hi friends! Today’s blog post has been something I’ve wanted to write for a while. Earlier this year I did a Books on my Sci-Fi TBR post and I’ve been wanting to do another one ever since. So here are some of the books on my A-Spec TBR!

But first, let’s cover what A-Spec means. A-Spec is generally an umbrella term used to refer to the asexual and aromantic spectrums. As a demisexual myself, I’m always on the lookout for books with a-spec characters. Asexuality in general gets a lot of hate and I am not here for it. That’s why I need everyone to read these books and be better.

Let’s dive in!

That Kind of Guy by Talia Hibbert

Synopsis43690183. SY475: If there’s one thing Rae can’t stand, it’s pity. She’s forty, frazzled, and fed up—so attending an awards ceremony alone while her ex swans about with his new wife? Not an option. To avoid total humiliation, Rae needs a date of her own. And her young, hot-as-hell new best friend is the perfect candidate…

Zach Davis, king of casual hookups, has a secret: the notorious womanizer craves emotional connection, and anonymous encounters leave him feeling hollow. After years of performance, Zach’s desperate to be himself. So why does he agree to play Rae’s fake boyfriend? And why does it feel so easy?

When the line between pretense and desire blurs, Zach’s forced to face an unexpected truth: there’s nothing phony about his need for Rae. But the jaded divorcée’s been hurt by playboy men before. Can a weekend of faking it prove that Zach’s for real?

I love Talia Hibbert. I enjoyed her Brown Sister’s series so much, which is now why I have to move on to another series of hers. When I found out that That Kind of Guy had a-spec rep I immediately added it to my TBR. The love interest in this book is apparently demi-sexual, which is a nice change of pace. We don’t often see male characters on the spectrum. This book also has an age gap romance, and fake dating. Sign me right up.

Drag Me Up by R.M. Virtues

Synopsis:Books on my a-spec TBR They say he’s a myth…

And Hades prefers it that way. He may do all the work, and Zeus may get all the credit, but at least it allows Hades to preserve the one thing he truly cares to have: his solitude. The mere mention of the Wraith of Khaos Falls is enough to keep order, and he is rarely forced to leave the shadows of Casino Asphodel.

She belongs in the spotlight…

And Persephone clawed her way out of Demeter’s shadow to reach it. Now she’s lead in Calliope’s Cirque production but not without great cost, and there is not enough money in the world to pay off the debt accrued for the simple mistake of trusting Zeus. Though it’s easier to ignore the bars when she still has room to fly.

Landing a residency at the legendary Casino Asphodel is everything she trained for. Meeting a man she’d been convinced didn’t exist? She could never be prepared for that. Hades isn’t prepared for her either, but it’s soon evident they’re a force when together. He gives her a soft place to land, and she makes him want to reach for the stars. But when Zeus ups the stakes, they must be willing to go all-in, even if it means coming down from the sky. Or stepping into the light.

I’m always game for a good Hades and Persephone retelling. Once again, the a-spec character in this book is the male love interest. Which I think is awesome, we need more male a-spec representation. I don’t know much else about this book, but everyone has been raving about it. Hopefully, I can read it soon. In the meantime, here’s a review you can read from The Wordy Habitat.

This Golden Flame by Emily Victoria

Synopsis:48713836 Orphaned and forced to serve her country’s ruling group of scribes, Karis wants nothing more than to find her brother, long ago shipped away. But family bonds don’t matter to the Scriptorium, whose sole focus is unlocking the magic of an ancient automaton army.

In her search for her brother, Karis does the seemingly impossible—she awakens a hidden automaton. Intelligent, with a conscience of his own, Alix has no idea why he was made. Or why his father—their nation’s greatest traitor—once tried to destroy the automatons.

Suddenly, the Scriptorium isn’t just trying to control Karis; it’s hunting her. Together with Alix, Karis must find her brother…and the secret that’s held her country in its power for centuries.

Admittedly I don’t know anything about this book, other than it has a pretty cover and an a-spec character. That seems to be enough for me. It’s also a standalone, and I love a low-commitment fantasy. Let me know if you’ve read this and what you think of it!

What We Devour by Linsey Miller

Synopsis:Books on my a-spec TBR Lorena Adler has a secret—she holds the power of the banished gods, the Noble and the Vile, inside her. She has spent her entire life hiding from the world and her past. She’s content to spend her days as an undertaker in a small town, marry her best friend, Julian, and live an unfulfilling life so long as no one uncovers her true nature.

But when the notoriously bloodthirsty and equally Vile crown prince comes to arrest Julian’s father, he immediately recognizes Lorena for what she is. So she makes a deal—a fair trial for her betrothed’s father in exchange for her service to the crown.

The prince is desperate for her help. He’s spent years trying to repair the weakening Door that holds back the Vile…and he’s losing the battle. As Lorena learns more about the Door and the horrifying price it takes to keep it closed, she’ll have to embrace both parts of herself to survive.

I have been wanting to read this book since it’s been announced. The cover and the synopsis gives me major Crimson Peak vibes and I need it in my life immediately. Lorena is described by the author as biromantic asexual. Honestly, I just want to read this for the gothic vibes.

There you have it! These are just some of the books on my a-spec TBR. I have a whole list on Goodreads if you’d like to see it. Thanks for reading!
