Tier Ranking My Book Club Books

Hi friends! I hope this month has been going well for you so far. Can you believe it’s almost March…AGAIN?? I swear time is not real. Anyhow, today I’m excited to be tier ranking my book club books! If you didn’t know, I host a book club with Mieke from MouseThatReads called The Read Better Book Club. We read 11 books in 2021 and today I’ll be sharing my feelings about them. Let’s hop in!

Yeet it into a volcano

This is the lowest rank on my tier maker (besides the “skipped” one, but I didn’t skip any of the books). These are books I have very strong negative feelings towards, and I just wish I could wipe them from my brains.

I put two books in this category: The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker and Witches Steeped in Gold.

Overall I was so disappointed in these because both of them were books I thought I would love with my whole heart. I hated the characters, storylines, and worldbuilding for both of these. Witches in particular disappointed me because it was on my Most Anticipated Books list.

We don’t talk about…these books

Okay, so I’ve been a little obsessed with Encanto lately, hence the name of this category. However, I think it fits. These are books I would rather just forget. In fact, I have forgotten about most of what happened in these books.

They are: The Spanish Love Deception and A Dark and Hollow Star.

Mild as Milk

This category is for books I liked, but overall felt very middle of the road about. I don’t have any strong positive or negative feelings towards these books. They were just meh, and they are: For the Wolf and The Bone Shard Daughter. Unfortunate, but I’m not too mad about it.

I would sell less vital organs for this book

This category is for books you really enjoyed, but it wasn’t entirely a five-star read. I enjoyed Perfect on Paper a lot, especially for the bisexual representation. I highly recommend that everyone read this book.

I would sell my soul for this book

This category is for the “crown jewels”. These books are the books we had the best discussions for, they had the most impactful stories, and are in my opinion some of the best books of 2021. Surprisingly this category has the most books in it, which means it was overall a good reading year for the book club.

These books are:

  • If We Were Villains
  • Get a Life, Chloe Brown
  • The Poppy War
  • The Space Between Worlds

And there you have it! My opinions on every book club pick for the Read Better Book Club in 2021.

  1. okay, I’m obsessed with this post idea! Unfortunately, I am absolutely terrible at book clubs (my inner rebellious mood reader just doesn’t do well with set TBRs apparently) but I have the urge to do a tier ranking post like this at the end of the year for all the books I read!

  2. Fun idea! I don’t do book clubs (I’m too flighty a reader) but I have The Bone Shard Emperor and would probably rank it the same. I still want to try For the Wolf, but if I find it ‘mild as milk’ I’ll probably DNF it 😛
