10 Books to Read in 2022

It’s that time of the year again! Welcome to my 1o books to read in 2022 list! I will admit that I am notoriously bad at sticking to lists like this, but hopefully, 2022 will be different. I am making this list and I will stick to it. Before we get into it, let’s see how I did in 2021.

10 Books to Read in 2021

How did I do in 2021?

  • Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor – I did not read it.
  • Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson – Also didn’t read it. One of my reading goals for 2022 is to read more adult fantasy, and this book is at the top of the list.
  • Wundersmith by Jessica Townsend – Unfortunately I unhauled this series, and decided not to continue it.
  • A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness – I am not doing well here. I didn’t even attempt to read this book.
  • Skyward by Brandon Sanderson – LOL.
  • Kingsbane by Claire Legrand – 2022 I SWEAR I’LL READ THIS.
  • Air Awakens by Elise Kova – Yeah, I didn’t read it.
  • The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon – I have read this book, however, I wanted to reread it in 2021. I did not.
  • The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang – OMG, I READ THIS BOOK!
  • To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini – I also read this chonker of a book. Yay me!

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars Review

For those counting, that makes 2/10 books. That is abysmal, I am so disappointed in myself. May 2022 be better.

10 Books to Read in 2022

The Burning God by R.F. Kuang

To be honest, I wanted to read The Burning God in 2021, but I had to wait for the paperback to release (which was November) so my set would be complete. Bookworm struggles. Now that I have the book on my shelf, I’m planning to read it ASAP. If you don’t know, The Burning God is the third book in R.F. Kuang’s Poppy War trilogy. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly suggest you do.

Scythe by Neal Shusterman

I’ve had Scythe on my radar for a while now, and since the whole series is complete I thought why not. In a world where there we’ve conquered death, scythes are now the only ones who can end life. Citra and Rowan are starting their scythe apprenticeship and I assume chaos ensues. The premise sounds like something I would like so I want to give it a try.

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

Rivals to lovers office romance? YES. I am ready for this book to be one of my favourites. Also, The Hating Game movie came out in 2021, and I really want to watch it, but I want to read the book first.

To Be Taught if Fortunate by Becky Chambers

This might be considered cheating, but I make the rules here. We’re reading To Be Taught if Fortunate as our March book club pick (so I have to read it) and it’s a novella. I’m a big fan of Becky Chambers and novellas, so I’m really excited for this one.

Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire

I am ridiculously excited for Where the Drowned Girls Go. I fell in love with the Wayward Children series from the very first book, and I can’t wait to return to this amazing world. The cover is gorgeous, the premise sounds awesome. This series follows children who visited magical worlds (think like Alice in Wonderland) and are now back in our world. Their stories are about grief, loss, adjusting, moving on, and finding the world where they belong. I am absolutely reading this.

Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li

I knew I had to read Portrait of a Thief the minute it was announced. I have the eARC waiting for me and I cannot wait to get to it. It’s pitched as Ocean’s Eleven meets The Farewell in Portrait of a Thief, a lush, lyrical heist novel inspired by the true story of Chinese art vanishing from Western museums, about diaspora, the colonization of art, and the complexity of the Chinese American identity. So excited!

Master of Sorrows by Justin T. Call

This might be cheating (again) but I’ve already started reading this book. I picked it up on the 5th of Jan, mainly because I was supposed to read it in 2022. My friends (Mieke & Sam) and I are doing an annotation rotation, where we each picked a book and annotated it, then swapped books. Master of Sorrow’s is Sam’s pick, and we were supposed to swap again in December but I just couldn’t pick it up. So now I’m reading Master of Sorrows.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

This was on last year’s list as well (oops). Maybe I’ll read it in 2022.

Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth

I recently received an eARC of Plain Bad Heroines from Netgalley, but I also already own a physical copy. I requested it in like 2019, and it was approved late 2020, so I don’t know what happened there. However, I do want to read it, so I’m not mad. All I know about this book is that it has ghosts, a boarding school, and a mystery.

Tempest and Slaughter by Tamora Pierce

Every time I pick this book up I think I’m going to get rid of it. But then I read the synopsis and I think I have to read it. So I’m putting Tempest & Slaughter on this list because apparently, it includes a magical university. Sign me up.

  1. I was the same with the announcement of Portrait of a Thief! It’s one of my most anticipated releases of 2022 (aside from The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston, which also sounds like a delight). I haven’t read many of the books you’ve mentioned, but I feel like you’re not really missing out on A Discovery of Witches from your 2021 goals. I read that book to compare it to the TV show and it wasn’t for me personally.

  2. Hi Bianca, I recently came across your blog via Twitter 🙂 Where the Drowned Girls Go is one I’m also looking forward to. Hopefully I can get a copy soon! Seasonal Fears (also by McGuire) is actually my number one most anticipated read of 2022. Have you read Middlegame?

          1. I just got myself a copy of Middlegame so I’m definitely putting it on my TBR for either March or April.
