Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag 2020 Edition

It can’t be June already, can it? Cue existential crisis. Honestly, this year went by so fast. I can’t even remember most of May. Lockdown will do that to you. Anyway, here’s my Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag!

1. Best book so far

Mid Year Book Freak Out TagOkay, so I have four books in this slot, mainly because I couldn’t decide which one was best. So in no particular order:

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire. This book just captured my attention from the very beginning. It has such an interesting premise and the characters are amazing. This book has an asexual main character and a trans character, which is amazing.

The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller. Look, we all know I’m trash for enemies to lovers and THIS BOOK. It went there. Go read it immediately.

Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales. This book just made me so happy. It was such a cute romance story and I was just all warm and fuzzy. Read my review here.

Of Silver and Shadows by Jennifer Gruenke. Another enemies to lovers fantasy book that I am trash for. I loved everything about this book and I suggest you read it too. Check out my review here.

2. Best sequel so far

I’m going to give this one to One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus. I really enjoy her writing and I was super excited about the sequel to One of Us is Lying. This book is full of twists and teenage drama in the best way possible.

3. New release you haven’t read but want to

Mid Year Book Freak Out TagThis one goes to The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski. My copy only arrived a few weeks ago (thanks to lockdown) and I’m super excited for it. Here’s the synopsis:

Where Nirrim lives, crime abounds, a harsh tribunal rules, and society’s pleasures are reserved for the High Kith. Life in the Ward is grim and punishing. People of her low status are forbidden from sampling sweets or wearing colours. You either follow the rules or pay a tithe and suffer the consequences.

Nirrim keeps her head down and a dangerous secret close to her chest.

But then she encounters Sid, a rakish traveller from far away who whispers rumours that the High Caste possesses magic. Sid tempts Nirrim to seek that magic for herself. But to do that, Nirrim must surrender her old life. She must place her trust in this sly stranger who asks, above all, not to be trusted.

Set in the world of the New York Times–bestselling Winner’s Trilogy, beloved author Marie Rutkoski returns with an epic LGBTQ romantic fantasy about learning to free ourselves from the lies others tell us—and the lies we tell ourselves

4. Most anticipated release for the rest of the year

Definitely A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik. This book is about a magical school where if you fail you die. It’s like Hogwarts except if you fail McGonagall murders you. Yeah, I’m here for it.

5. Biggest Disappointment so far

Oof, I’m going with The Court of Miracles by Kester Grant. I wanted to like this book so much, but I just couldn’t. The writing was all over the place and the main protagonist was a total Mary Sue. The Court of Miracles is marketed as Six of Crows meet Les Mis, and that just set high expectations that the book did not meet.

6. Biggest Surprise

If you know me, you know I don’t read a lot of romance. I really enjoyed Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey. Note: Don’t listen to the audiobook out loud when other people are in the vicinity. It’s definitely NSFW.

7. Favourite new author

While Seanan McGuire is not a new author, she is new to me. I read all of the current books in the Wayward Children series and I would absolutely read all of Seanan McGuire’s work.

8. New fictional crush

Ezra from Illuminae. I know, I should have gotten to Illuminae sooner, but the size really intimidated me. It was a surprisingly quick read and I really loved Ezra. I can’t wait to continue the series.

9. New favourite character

How could I not give this to Alessandra from The Shadows Between Us? I love a good morally grey character, especially a female morally grey character. I could also really relate to her (I also killed the first boy who broke my heart) and her story was just really entertaining.

10. Made you cry

Books don’t make me cry, so I’m going to skip this question.

11. A book that made you happy

More Than Maybe by Erin Hahn. I just had so much fun reading this book and it just made me so happy. I definitely recommend reading my review here.

12. Most beautiful book

Not only is the cover of Woven in Moonlight AMAZING, but the book is amazing too. Although the cover is really pretty. I mean look at it:

13. Book you need to read before the end of the year

There’s a whole list here, to be honest. I would love to reread Six of Crows before the end of the year. It is my favourite book of all time so I definitely need to dive back into the Grishaverse.

That’s it for my list! I hope you enjoyed it, and feel free to take part in this tag as well!
