The Most Disappointing Books of 2020
Hello friends! I debated for a long time if I was going to make this post (thanks to the drama surrounding content like this) but I figured I would do it anyway. We all have different opinions and thoughts, and I want to share mine. Here are The Most Disappointing Books of 2020.
So here’s your disclaimer: These are my opinions. This list is in no way objective. If these are your favourite books, that’s great! This is not a personal attack on you or your tastes.
Let’s get into it!

The Most Disappointing Books of 2021
These are in no particular order, I mostly listed them by months that I read them in. I will start off by mentioning the books that I actually finished, and then mention the books I DNF’d.
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
This was my first Erin Morgenstern book (and probably my last, lol). The premise sounded so intriguing but I felt like Morgenstern didn’t do anything with it. There was a lot of waffle, a rushed romance, and not enough character building. I did not enjoy it, and the more I think about it, the more I dislike it.
Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
I will admit that I did not like this book. I think it’s very problematic and not well written. The pacing was weird, there was zero worldbuilding, and the characters were awful. I will definitely not be continuing this series.
The Court of Miracles by Kester Grant
I was very disappointed with this book. I’m not a big fan of Les Mis, but I had high hopes for this book. It was marketed as Six of Crows meets Les Mis, and I love Six of Crows. However, The Court of Miracles was just disappointing. There was no character building, the pacing was very weird and the main character was a complete Mary Sue.
The Princess Will Save You by Sarah Henning
I won’t beat around the bush, I hated this book. This was supposed to be a feminist retelling of The Princess Bride and I found it severely lacking. The main character was all tell and no show. She kept making dumb decisions and then saying she’s too smart to make dumb decisions. I’m also really tired of fantasies that feel like they have to continue oppressing women. We have enough of that in the real world, be more creative.
DNF – Fortuna Sworn by K.J. Sutton
I mainly picked this up because it was highly recommended by Becca from Becca and the Books. I hated it. Fantasy romance tends to veer toward the “male saviour” and “virgin obsession” tropes and I am not here for it. I don’t want to get into it too much, but I find myself shying away from fantasy romance. They don’t have enough fantasy, and I don’t want to read about virgin girls and their male saviours. Skip.
DNF – Gravemaidens by Kelly Coon
I only got about 60 pages into this book before I put it down. The story started off too slow and the writing style just did not agree with me.
DNF – Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Leviathan
This was our December book club pick for The Read Better Book Club. I DNF’d it because Dash was way too pretentious for a sixteen-year-old and Lily acted like a five-year-old. Skip.

I have not read any of those. Sorry to hear that they fell short of your expectations.
I haven’t read any of these, but I keep debating about The Starless Sea because I’ve seen so many negative and positive reviews.
A few of these are on my TBR, but I have seen some seriously mixed reviews so I can understand why they disappointed you.
Hey, if we all liked EXACTLY the same books think of what the consequences would be. Some did sound interesting though and I see why you gave them a whirl!
Sorry these didn’t live up to your expectations. I haven’t read any of them.
I loved Dash and Lily when I first read it but that was a long time ago now, and I 100% agree with you on Dash being pretentious. Looking back, I just want to knock some sense into him.
I couldn’t finish Dash and Lily either, the MCs were just too annoying!
